Sony PS5 strategy is shifting towards recurring revenue, with CEO Hiroki Totoki telling The Wall Street Journal that PlayStation is focusing on its existing user base rather than selling more hardware.

Sony PS5 strategy shifts towards recurring revenue

Totoki said the PS5 is in the latter half of its life cycle, meaning Sony does not need to push hardware sales as aggressively as it would at launch. “It is lucky, you know. We are in the latter half of the lifetime cycle of a PS console. That means that we do not need to aggressively sell the console today,” he said in the Wall Street Journal interview cited by Kotaku.

Sony’s latest figures give the strategy a large installed base to work with. PlayStation had 125 million monthly active users as of June 30, 2026, while cumulative PS5 sell-in passed 95 million units. The company says the monthly active user figure is an estimate of unique accounts that played games or used PlayStation services online during the last month of the quarter.

Hardware sales are softer, but Sony’s gaming profit rose

Sony’s Game & Network Services division reported sales of ¥937.1 billion for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, broadly flat year-on-year. Operating income rose 37% to ¥202.0 billion, according to Sony’s Q1 FY2026 results.

PS5 hardware sales fell to 1.6 million units in the quarter, down from 2.5 million in the same quarter a year earlier. Sony’s official PlayStation sales figures put cumulative PS5 sell-in above 95 million units as of June 30.

Totoki said Sony’s PS5 strategy is to focus on “recurring revenue from the current user base”. That points to subscriptions, digital game purchases and add-on content as the main ways to grow the business around consoles already sold. Sony has forecast ¥660 billion in full-year operating income for Game & Network Services, up from its earlier ¥600 billion forecast.

There is no new PS6 release window in the interview. Sony’s comments describe a business decision for the current generation, not a confirmation of when its successor will launch.
