Minecraft The Sift is coming to Java and Bedrock Edition in 2027, giving the block-building game its first new dimension in more than 14 years. Mojang revealed the dimension during Minecraft Live, where it also showed new ice caves, a frozen zombie and a Nintendo Switch 2 release date.
The Sift first appears in Minecraft Dungeons II, which launches on 29 September. The spin-off’s new interconnected world uses rifts to carry players into The Sift, with the Meadow and Carapace among the areas shown so far. Mojang’s official recap confirms that the dimension will later come to the main game’s Java and Bedrock editions.
Minecraft The Sift brings a fourth dimension
Minecraft currently has the Overworld, the Nether and the End. The Sift will become the fourth, although Mojang has not yet given a specific 2027 release date or explained how its mobs, resources and progression will work in survival mode. The long wait between dimensions means players have had plenty of time to make theories, builds and probably several spreadsheets about it.
The event also introduced underground ice caves as part of a coming game drop. The rare biome contains ice crystals that emit light, icicles and calcite, while frozen zombies can inflict a freezing effect and throw ice balls. Those ice balls can be used in combat and to craft freezing potions.
Minecraft comes to Nintendo Switch 2 in October
Minecraft arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 on 27 October. Nintendo says the version will support a new visual mode with better lighting and shadows, and existing Switch owners will receive a digital upgrade path. The Mario Mash-Up pack is also being updated for the new visuals.
The Sift is the long-term Minecraft story, but Dungeons II will offer the first hands-on visit. Players wanting more background can also revisit Mojang’s Minecraft Dungeons II announcement before the sequel launches.
