Qualcomm’s next flagship chip is tipped to double its GPU slices to six, and the Pro version may cost phone makers more than $300. Both rumours point the same way: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 means faster Android flagships — and pricier ones — when it lands at Snapdragon Summit.
Leaker Digital Chat Station, via Android Authority, says the Gen 6 series moves to a six-slice GPU — twice the three slices in the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and the original 8 Elite. A slice is a self-contained block of graphics hardware with its own clock speeds, shader cores and fixed-function units. More slices means more graphics work in parallel: better gaming, faster 3D rendering, and a hand in some AI tasks. Doubling the slices won’t double performance — clocks and cache get a vote too.
Both new chips share the same foundation: TSMC’s 2nm process, a 2+3+3 Oryon CPU, and a six-slice GPU. The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 pairs an Adreno 845 with 12MB of graphics memory and LPDDR5X; the Pro steps up to an Adreno 850 with 18MB and LPDDR6. Qualcomm appears to have left the vanilla chip in good shape rather than crippling it to sell the Pro — Wccftech reckons some makers may skip the Pro altogether.
The price is the other half of the leak. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 cost makers about $120 in 2022; the 8 Gen 3 about $200 in 2024. The Gen 6 Pro is rumoured to clear $300, with some estimates at $320, per PhoneArena. TSMC’s 2nm wafers run about $30,000 each, and memory prices are up 70% for DRAM and 100% for NAND over the past year, per Gizchina. At that point, the processor alone eats close to a third of a flagship’s build budget. MediaTek’s Dimensity 9600, rumoured at about $216, is the obvious alternative for brands outside the top five.
What it means if you’re shopping in the UAE
The current benchmark is the Galaxy S26 Ultra, which runs the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. It pre-ordered from AED 3,299 (256GB) and lists around AED 5,099; it now sells from about AED 3,300 online. A $300-plus chip is roughly AED 1,100 to the manufacturer before the memory bill lands. The S27 Ultra and other late-2026 flagships are expected to carry the Pro, so early UAE launch prices are likely to move up — how far is guesswork until Qualcomm makes it official in September.
