The Rocket Raccoon retirement is official: Sean Gunn has stepped away from the performance-capture role after years of crouching, pivoting and generally making a living at knee height. The actor told The Brandon Davis Show that he no longer thinks he could physically provide the motion reference if Marvel called again.

Gunn, who turned 50 a couple of years ago, said the strain has landed mainly in his feet and ankles rather than his knees. His work as Rocket’s on-set performer gave the other actors a physical scene partner and provided reference for the animators, while Bradley Cooper supplied the character’s final voice.

“Everyone thinks it’s my knees but it’s really my feet and my ankles. Because I’m in a catcher’s crouch and I’m pivoting a lot on my points of contact with the ground… over the years I think it had a little bit of an effect on my physiology.”

Rocket Raccoon retirement follows years of motion-capture work

“I am retired from Rocket,” Gunn said. “Not that they’ve called, but if they did, I don’t think I could do the motion reference for Rocket anymore. I’m too old.” He added that the change could give a younger performer a chance to take on the physical role.

Gunn performed Rocket across the Guardians of the Galaxy films, Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, Thor: Love and Thunder, and the Guardians holiday special. He also played Kraglin, giving him a second on-set role in the franchise. IGN reports that Rocket’s story ended with a new Guardians team forming at the close of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

That does not amount to a retirement for Rocket himself. Marvel has not confirmed its next Guardians project, and the studio’s future plans for the team remain unclear. The character could return through an Avengers story or another Marvel project, but there is no announced film that requires Gunn’s performance capture.

What Sean Gunn’s retirement means for Marvel’s Rocket

The Rocket Raccoon retirement concerns the physical performance, not Bradley Cooper’s voice work. Marvel could recast the on-set reference role while keeping Cooper as the voice, although no replacement has been announced.

Gunn’s departure also closes one of the less visible parts of Rocket’s creation. The character may be computer-generated, but the performance still began with an actor crouched in the corner of a live-action set, trying not to make his ankles file a formal complaint. GamesRadar+ also notes that Gunn’s motion-capture work often involved crouching and kneeling for long periods.

For now, Rocket remains part of the Guardians team introduced at the end of Vol. 3. Any return, and whoever physically performs him next, will depend on a Marvel announcement that has not arrived yet.

Will Bradley Cooper still voice Rocket Raccoon?

Sean Gunn’s announcement concerns the on-set performance-capture role. Marvel has not announced a change to Bradley Cooper’s voice role.

Can Rocket Raccoon return without Sean Gunn?

Yes. Marvel could use another performance-capture actor, but it has not announced a replacement or confirmed Rocket’s next appearance.

Why did Sean Gunn retire from playing Rocket?

Gunn said the crouched motion-capture position and repeated pivoting had affected his feet and ankles after years of performing the role.
