Vijay Sethupathi has confirmed that Maharaja 2 is in development, with director Nithilan Saminathan having already narrated the sequel’s story to him. The actor also said he would act for free in the Hollywood remake of the original film if he is given a role.
The comments came at the audio launch of Sethupathi’s upcoming film Baththa. He praised Saminathan’s writing and described the story for Maharaja 2 as “so beautiful”, moving the sequel beyond the stage of a vague possibility.
Maharaja 2 has a story, but no release date
Sethupathi did not reveal a release date, cast beyond his own expected involvement, or production schedule for the sequel. The original Maharaja was written and directed by Saminathan and released in June 2024, with Sethupathi playing a barber drawn into a violent search for a missing item.
The film’s cast also included Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, Abhirami and Sachana Namidass. Its success on streaming helped the Tamil thriller find a wider audience after its theatrical run, including in China.
Sethupathi wants a role in the Hollywood remake
Sethupathi said producer Sudhan Sundaram told him that a Hollywood agency had acquired the remake rights. He then offered to appear in the American version without a fee, asking only for a role.
The Hollywood adaptation is separate from Maharaja 2. Sundaram has said the remake could enter production next year with an A-list actor under consideration. Matthew McConaughey has been linked to the project in reports, but neither his casting nor the studio has been officially confirmed.
