Alan Ritchson replaces Jason Momoa in Helldivers movie

Alan Ritchson is in talks to lead Sony’s Helldivers movie after Jason Momoa exited the video game adaptation, with the film still set for cinemas on 10 November 2027. Sony has not announced a final deal, so for now Ritchson is the likely new face of a very loud interplanetary democracy.

The Hollywood Reporter says the Reacher star is in talks to headline the film. It would be his first time leading a theatrical studio feature, following supporting roles in Fast X and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, as well as his lead role in Prime Video’s Reacher.

Momoa’s departure was reported in June, with creative differences cited by sources. The Wrap confirmed that Sony was continuing the casting process and that Justin Lin remains attached to direct. The earlier Jason Momoa exit report now has a fairly direct sequel, although this one has a different large action star in the armour.

What the Helldivers movie is adapting

The film comes from Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions and is based on Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers games. The series has sold more than 12 million units across its first four months of Helldivers 2, according to The Wrap, while Sony previously described the project as part of its expanding game-adaptation slate at CinemaCon.

The games follow elite Helldivers fighting Bugs and other alien threats in the name of Super Earth. The game has continued to build its own story between updates, including a recent Helldivers 2 Cyborg teaser. The official game artwork above is source-material context, not a still from the film. PlayStation’s official Helldivers II page shows the world the adaptation will be drawing from, while Sony’s CinemaCon report confirms Lin discussed the film and its 2027 theatrical plans.

The first Helldivers launched in 2015, followed by Helldivers 2 in 2024. Gary Dauberman wrote the initial screenplay, with Lin, Hutch Parker and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash producing. Sony has not confirmed the film’s plot, wider cast or production start date.

For now, the Helldivers movie has its director, release date and a possible new lead. The next deployment will need to clarify whether Ritchson’s deal closes and how closely the film follows the games’ deliberately militarised satire.
