Johnny Depp Returns to Hollywood as Ebenezer Scrooge in First Trailer for His Comeback Film

Johnny Depp appears as Scrooge in the first Ebenezer trailer, as Ti West’s Christmas ghost story prepares for its 13 November theatrical release.

Is there a new Scrooge movie?

Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol is a new Christmas ghost story starring Johnny Depp as Ebenezer Scrooge. Paramount is releasing the adaptation of Charles Dickens’ 1843 novella, with Ti West directing from a screenplay by Nathaniel Halpern.

The film follows Scrooge through a supernatural confrontation with his past, present, and future as he seeks another chance at redemption. It is pitched as a darker ghost story set in Dickens’ London rather than a broad festive comedy, giving West an intriguing playground for a tale that already comes fully stocked with spectres.

Depp is joined by Ian McKellen, Daisy Ridley, Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Tramell Tillman, Sam Claflin, Charlie Murphy, Arthur Conti, and Ellie Bamber. Specific roles for most of the supporting cast have yet to be confirmed, so any assumptions about who is playing Bob Cratchit or the assorted Christmas spirits should remain outside the counting house for now.

What happened with Johnny Depp at Comic-Con?

Johnny Depp appeared at San Diego Comic-Con in full Scrooge costume before unexpectedly introducing the Ebenezer trailer during a panel. As our sister site IGN Middle East reports, he met visitors at a pop-up recreation of Scrooge’s house, chatted with fans, and delivered the inevitable “humbug” to cheers.

Depp later appeared during the Directors on Directing panel to reveal the trailer. The event supplied the clearest public look yet at his transformation into Dickens’ miser, although Paramount had previously presented initial footage with Depp in attendance at CinemaCon, according to Deadline’s CinemaCon report.

The comeback framing needs a little care. Ebenezer is being positioned as Depp’s first major Hollywood starring role in several years after a run of smaller and international projects. The Comic-Con appearance makes that return highly visible: costume, crowd, trailer, and one extremely marketable Victorian catchphrase all included.

When is Ebenezer being released, and is there a UAE date?

Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol is scheduled to open in US cinemas on 13 November 2026, but a UAE theatrical date has not been confirmed. UAE viewers should therefore treat the November date as the film’s US release rather than assume local day-and-date availability.

The timing places the film ahead of Christmas, with Paramount clearly leaning into the enduring recognition of Scrooge and Depp’s return to a large studio production. A familiar literary property, a filmmaker associated with darker material, and an unusually stacked cast make this more interesting than another routine retelling.

Nothing about Ebenezer confirms that Depp will return as Captain Jack Sparrow. Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer has spoken positively about wanting Depp back and has said that some previous cast members would return for a future film, but Disney has not formally confirmed Depp for another Pirates project. Any connection between Ebenezer’s reception and Jack Sparrow’s future remains speculation — the ghost of franchises yet to come can wait.
