Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Mature rating is looking likely: an Xbox Store listing carries a tentative “Likely Mature 17+” ESRB sticker for the game ahead of its Spring 2027 launch.
GamesRadar spotted the listing. Both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launched with T for Teen ratings, and neither had much more than the occasional swear word or rare sight of a katana going through someone’s belly. The remake series also sanded down some of the original’s most explicit moments — Sephiroth’s rampage through Shinra Tower no longer leaves the walls dripping in blood.

Remake and Rebirth kept their Teen ratings
The first two parts of the trilogy both shipped T for Teen from the ESRB. Remake and Rebirth held their language in check, and the original game’s nastier touches were softened rather than recreated shot for shot.
What a Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Mature rating would change
The ESRB website explains that the “Likely Mature 17+” note means the game is “anticipated to be rated 17+”, which would indicate “intense violence, blood and gore, and/or strong language.” The sticker is subject to change closer to release.
Why Cid is the prime suspect
GamesRadar’s bet is on Cid. He is now a permanent, playable party member from the start, and Rebirth put a leash on the pilot’s foul mouth. Revelation’s version might be closer to his original incarnation — short-tempered, outright rude, always full of smoke.
Final Fantasy fans have offered their own theories, from an intimate scene in the original game that will upset Aerith shippers to “Sephiroth hanging dong”, which is probably not happening. The game itself is due on all platforms in spring 2027 — we covered its all-platform simultaneous launch and its gamescom trailer earlier this year.
What is Final Fantasy 7 Revelation rated?
No final rating has been confirmed. An Xbox Store listing carries a tentative ‘Likely Mature 17+’ ESRB sticker, which the ESRB says means the game is anticipated to be rated 17+ at launch. The rating can change closer to release.
Why is Final Fantasy 7 Revelation heading for a Mature rating?
Square Enix has not said. GamesRadar’s theory is that Cid, now a permanent and playable party member from the start, brings strong language closer to his original incarnation. Fans have floated other reasons, from an intimate scene in the original game to Sephiroth.
When does Final Fantasy 7 Revelation come out?
The game is due in spring 2027, launching simultaneously on all platforms — PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
