NVIDIA has released RTX Remix 1.6, and the headline feature is DLSS 5 with 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, now available to modders working on older PC games. The release notes on GitHub are dated 23 October 2026, and the update is available through GitHub and the NVIDIA App. It’s the most direct route yet to DLSS 5 in games whose developers never added it.
What DLSS 5 does inside Remix
Unlike conventional DLSS Super Resolution, which reconstructs a higher-resolution image, DLSS 5 uses the rendered scene and game-engine information to enhance lighting and material appearance, as TweakTown describes it. In Remix 1.6, NVIDIA’s notes list global controls for three models (A, B and C), highlight and volumetric tuning, and per-material control masks. That means modders can dial the effect up on a suit of armour and leave a wall alone, rather than accepting one look across the whole scene.
NVIDIA has shown the result in two community projects. Sparkles/Kim2091 used it in Fallout 4 RTX for armour reflections, material detail and shadowing, while SoftSoundd’s Mirror’s Edge RTX shows changes to contact shadows, ambient occlusion and lighting. NVIDIA has a Fallout 4 comparison page for the before-and-after, and VideoCardz notes both projects are still in development.
It’s a modding tool, not a switch
VideoCardz calls the approach “semi-official”. NVIDIA can’t modify third-party games at a low level without special agreements, so Remix relies on gamers doing the work themselves. The outlet says modders enable DLSS 5 by installing the latest Remix runtime, opening the overlay with Alt+X and going into the developer settings. A game must already be compatible with Remix, or have a suitable integration, before any of that applies. The release also raises the minimum NVIDIA driver to 616.92.
Remix’s existing job is replacing textures, materials and lighting, and adding path tracing to older titles. We covered the last round in Remix 1.5, which cut the Half-Life 2 RTX demo to 50GB. DLSS 5 now sits on top of that pipeline. NVIDIA has also said it plans DLSS 5 support for RTX 40-series GPUs, which will matter to anyone not on the newest cards.
6X frame generation, Windows on ARM and AMD tweaks
The same update adds 5X and 6X Multi Frame Generation choices on supported hardware. Wccftech reports that means GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs. Remix also integrates the beta Frame Generation Performance Mode, known as Preset C. Wccftech says NVIDIA earlier cited gains of up to 35% for that mode on an RTX 5060, in general rather than in Remix. Enthusiasts had already unlocked Multi Frame Generation on RTX 40 cards through mods, so official tooling for the newer multipliers fits the pattern.
Other rendering changes include sparse rendering with DLSS Ray Reconstruction, which offers sampling-rate controls that trade performance for image quality, and OpenEXR HDR texture and skybox ingestion. On the tooling side, ComfyUI 2.0 replaces the legacy AI tools with texture and mesh workflows. A headless Toolkit host adds agent-assisted modding. The MCP server migration is a breaking change: it now defaults to Streamable HTTP, so existing client configurations need updating.
The runtime also gains native Windows on ARM support, with ARM64 and ARM64EC builds. NVIDIA names Portal RTX, the Half-Life 2 RTX demo and the Minecraft beta as day-one supported projects on ARM platforms such as RTX Spark. AMD users get a smaller bonus. Remix now selects the TraceRay implementation by default on AMD Windows drivers, which NVIDIA says gave about 20% more performance in community measurements, from 53 to 63 FPS on driver 26.6.4.
Minecraft gets an experimental Remix mod
The most visible new project is RTX Remix for Minecraft. It’s a Fabric mod that brings Remix path tracing to Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1 through an API-based rendering pipeline. NVIDIA built a PBR texture pack and worked with BlockWorks on a demo map. The free mod is in early beta, and compatibility with other mods is limited. The source code is on NVIDIA’s GitHub, and the release targets 1.21.1 only.
Can DLSS 5 be added to any old PC game now?
No. A game has to work with RTX Remix first, or have a suitable integration, and a modder then enables DLSS 5 through the Remix runtime and Toolkit. Fallout 4 RTX and Mirror’s Edge RTX are the two projects NVIDIA has shown so far, and both are unfinished.
Where do I download RTX Remix 1.6?
Through the NVIDIA App or the GitHub release page, where the runtime is listed as version 1.6.1. You’ll need NVIDIA driver 616.92 or newer.
Is the Minecraft path-tracing mod ready for heavily modded worlds?
Not yet. NVIDIA calls it an early beta for Java Edition 1.21.1, and compatibility with other mods is limited. We’d start with the BlockWorks demo map before trying your own setup.
