Owners of jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles can now download Windows games from their Steam library and run them on the console’s own hardware. The tool behind it is Playden for PS5, an alpha launcher from developer leolobato that adapts the macOS version of Playden. VideoCardz reports that games including Cyberpunk 2077 have reached a playable state. Nothing is streamed from a PC or the cloud, and the project isn’t affiliated with Sony or Valve.

How Playden works

Playden runs as an ordinary PS5 app rather than a separate operating system, so there’s no Linux boot involved. According to the project’s GitHub page, users sign in to Steam, browse their library and download games, and each title then gets its own tile on the PS5 Home screen. The Windows games run through prospero-win, a port of Wine to the PS5, and each one lives in a private Windows environment so settings and crashes stay contained.

Graphics are handled by translation layers. The README lists Direct3D 8-11 support through DXVK, and version 0.5.0 added Direct3D 12 support through VKD3D-Proton, which opened the door to games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Deep Rock Galactic. The DualSense appears to games as an Xbox controller, and a USB mouse and keyboard also work.

What runs, and what doesn’t

VideoCardz says the project’s compatibility database lists Cyberpunk 2077, Hollow Knight, Cuphead, Portal 2, Dead Cells and Deep Rock Galactic as playable. The Cyberpunk 2077 entry reflects a 13-minute test with a controller and no frame-rate figures, so it shows the game launches rather than how well it runs. TechPowerUp describes the list as mostly older and indie titles such as Half-Life 2, Fallout: New Vegas and Vampire Survivors, with plenty of other games crashing or refusing to start.

The limits are firm. Online multiplayer isn’t supported, games with kernel-level anti-cheat can’t run, and titles that need their own launchers, such as the EA app, don’t work yet. The README lists Steam game updates, GOG and Epic support, and launches for Rockstar, EA and Ubisoft games as planned features.

Development is moving quickly

The pace explains the buzz. The first public release went up on 12 October, and TechPowerUp says version 0.6.0 followed this week. The 0.6.0 notes add imports of Windows games you already own from a USB drive or over FTP, and 120 Hz output with kit 0.12. TechPowerUp also reports a 4K resolution option in the same update.

This is the opposite approach to the streaming devices that dominate PlayStation accessories right now, such as the Acer Nitro Blaze Link streaming handheld. Playden’s games execute on the PS5 itself, which is why they depend on the console’s hardware and firmware rather than a network connection.

What you need, and what it risks

The setup isn’t casual. The project documents PS5 firmware 13.60 with a jailbreak as the tested configuration, and other firmware versions are untested. Users also have to load several payloads after every boot, including kstuff, ShadowMountPlus and an ELF loader. A computer with Python 3 on the same network copies Playden and its runtime kit to the console over FTP.

The README is blunt about the risks. It calls Playden an unofficial Steam client that Valve doesn’t support, and says it stores a Steam sign-in token on the console without encryption, so anyone with file access to a jailbroken PS5 could read it. A bug in Steam Cloud syncing can also overwrite good saves with older ones. The developer warns of crashes and the occasional console restart. We’d back up saves first, and treat a spare Steam account as the safer test.

What it means in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt

None of the sources mention a regional limit or a Sony statement. Playden is a free-to-download GitHub project under the GPL-3.0 licence, so access depends on the console’s firmware and a working jailbreak rather than on where you bought it. Anyone in the Gulf or Egypt who isn’t already running a jailbroken console on compatible firmware has nothing to install.

Does Playden stream games from a PC?

No. The games are downloaded from Steam to the PS5 and run on the console’s hardware through a Wine port, which sets it apart from Remote Play and cloud gaming.

Do I need a jailbroken PS5 to use it?

Yes. The project documents firmware 13.60 with a jailbreak and several helper payloads as the tested setup, and other firmware versions are untested.

Can I play online multiplayer games or titles with anti-cheat?

Not currently. Online multiplayer isn’t supported, and games with kernel-level anti-cheat can’t run.
