Alinea Analytics estimates that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has sold 8.7 million copies and earned USD 366 million since its April 2025 launch. According to GamesRadar+, which summarised the analyst’s post, the money came overwhelmingly from PC: 58.8% of sales were on Steam, while only 5.5% came from Xbox users. That lopsided split is the story, because the game spent most of its life as a “free” download for Xbox subscribers.
How it stacks up against other GOTY winners
Alinea’s post compares the last four Game of the Year winners, and Sandfall’s debut lands third on both copies and revenue. GamesRadar+ reports the figures as follows:
| Game | Copies sold | Revenue |
|---|---|---|
| Elden Ring | 36.4 million | USD 2 billion |
| Baldur’s Gate 3 | 23.2 million | USD 1.2 billion |
| Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 | 8.7 million | USD 366 million |
| Astro Bot | 4.7 million | USD 291 million |
GamesRadar+ calls Astro Bot’s lower total a natural result for a console exclusive in a niche genre, and Clair Obscur sits ahead of it. By our arithmetic, the game averages about USD 42 per copy, the lowest of the four. It’s still a big number for a debut: the game matched Baldur’s Gate 3’s record by taking all five major GOTY awards, and later won Best Game at the BAFTAs.
Game Pass took a bite out of Xbox, not Steam
The Xbox figure comes with an obvious explanation. GamesRadar+ says Clair Obscur was available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers until last week, and Alinea counts 4.3 million players who reached the game that way across Xbox consoles and PC Game Pass. The analyst calls the effect on Xbox sales “Game Pass cannibalization”. Yet Steam still took the lion’s share of sales, which suggests PC Game Pass access didn’t stop PC players from buying the game. The game left the service on 15 October, so anyone who played through the subscription now needs to buy it to keep playing.
Sandfall’s creative director Guillaume Broche has been upbeat about the arrangement. GamesRadar+ reports that he says the subscription “lowered that barrier of entry”, which matters for a turn-based RPG that could put off players who prefer real-time action. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella also argues the game’s sales potential was likely increased by its subscription inclusion. The logic is sound: 4.3 million subscribers trying the game doesn’t mean 4.3 million lost sales, and word of mouth from that audience may well have fed Steam purchases.
Where the numbers sit against Sandfall’s own
According to OpenCritic, Sandfall and publisher Kepler Interactive last gave a public milestone in April 2026, when the studio said the game had sold over 8 million units globally. Alinea’s 8.7 million estimate sits above that, and the studio hasn’t confirmed it or the revenue figure.
For UAE players, the Game Pass exit is the practical consequence. tbreak’s 4 October check found the UAE Steam listing at AED 159.20, down from AED 199, so prices may have moved since. As for what comes next, Sandfall has said its next game won’t try to please everyone.
Are these Clair Obscur sales figures official?
No. GamesRadar+ reports that they’re Alinea Analytics’ estimates. The studio’s last public figure was “over 8 million” units in April 2026.
Can I still play Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 on Game Pass?
No. It left Xbox Game Pass on 15 October, so you’ll need to buy it on Steam, Xbox or another platform to keep playing.
How much does Clair Obscur cost in the UAE?
tbreak’s 4 October check showed AED 159.20 on the UAE Steam store. Prices change, so check the store page before you buy.
