Pixar has shown the first look at Coco 2: a teenage Miguel, Dante at his side, with the sequel set for theatres in November 2029.

The concept art was unveiled at D23, where Benjamin Bratt confirmed he is back as Ernesto de la Cruz. In the original film, the character was Miguel’s idol turned villain; in the sequel he is out for revenge.

“To some, Miguel is a little menace who ruined a career and destroyed a legacy. Ernesto de la Cruz is back for revenge, sending Miguel on an adventure back to the land of the dead. Proving fate has a sense of humor, Miguel must team up with a handsome superstar: me.”

The sequel picks up years after the 2017 original, with Miguel now a teenager. Lee Unkrich, who directed Coco, returns alongside Adrian Molina; Mark Nielsen, whose credits include Toy Story 4 and Inside Out 2, produces. The songwriting team behind “Remember Me” is writing new music for the sequel.

Coco 2 release date and what to expect

Coco 2 lands in theatres in November 2029. It is the latest sequel in a Pixar run that has produced two billion-dollar films in a row: Toy Story 5 and Inside Out 2 both passed $1 billion worldwide, with Incredibles 3 following in 2028.

The original followed Miguel, a boy who sneaks into the mausoleum of his idol Ernesto de la Cruz on Día de los Muertos and ends up stranded in the Land of the Dead, where he uncovers the truth about his family’s ban on music. Héctor, his skeleton guide, is also set to return in the sequel.

The original Coco, by the numbers

Coco grossed $823 million worldwide and won two Oscars, for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. Pixar announced the sequel in March 2025; a Coco ride is also under construction at Disney California Adventure, due to open next year.

UAE audiences typically get Pixar releases around the global theatrical window. Local dates are not confirmed yet; expect them closer to the time.
