Beam Global and Masdar City have signed an MOU to explore off-grid EV charging, solar-integrated e-bikes and other clean-energy mobility systems in Abu Dhabi.
Beam Global Masdar City agreement covers off-grid charging
The non-binding agreement brings Beam Middle East into Masdar City Free Zone’s ecosystem after the company received a licence there. The companies will assess possible uses for Beam’s energy and mobility products, but have not announced a deployment site, timetable or contract value. The proposed systems include off-grid EV charging infrastructure, solar-integrated e-bike solutions and other equipment designed to operate without a direct connection to the electricity grid. Beam says the technology is intended for rapid deployment; the MOU does not confirm that any of the products will be installed.
Why the MOU is taking place in Abu Dhabi
The work will be explored through Masdar City’s Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industries cluster, known as SAVI. The cluster provides a framework for companies assessing smart-transit technologies, while the wider Free Zone hosts organisations working across energy, mobility and other technology fields.
Desmond Wheatley, CEO of Beam Global, said the company’s systems were designed to deploy without grid constraints. Dr Mohamed Al Breiki, executive director of Masdar City, said the agreement would allow the partners to evaluate off-grid energy and next-generation mobility technologies.
Masdar City said in earlier background material that it was home to more than 900 organisations in 2021. The new release describes the Free Zone as hosting more than 2,000 organisations, although the two figures cover different dates and should not be treated as a like-for-like growth measure.
The MOU follows Beam Global’s 2025 formation of Beam Middle East with Platinum Group. The UAE agreement is an exploration phase: there is no confirmed rollout for Abu Dhabi residents, no consumer pricing and no announced charging network.

The partners will need to publish a project, location and installation schedule before the MOU becomes a local charging service. For now, it is a framework to assess what could be deployed inside Masdar City. The Beam Global Masdar City agreement confirms the same exploration-stage status.
