Which Apple Watch should you buy in the UAE: SE 3, Series 12 or Ultra 4?

Apple sells three watches in the UAE. Two of them are new: the Apple Watch Series 12, announced on 9 September and starting at AED 1,599, and the Apple Watch Ultra 4 at AED 3,199 — both on sale from 18 September. At the budget end, the Apple Watch SE 3 carries over unchanged at AED 999 and is on sale now.

Neither new model went up in price. Series 12 launches at the same AED 1,599 as the Series 11 did, and Ultra 4 matches the Ultra 3 at AED 3,199 — worth noting in a year when the rest of the Apple line-up did move.

What is actually new this year

The Health Sensing System is the reason to care about Series 12 and Ultra 4. Apple redesigned the optical and electrical sensors and paired them with the S11, using larger, more efficient green LEDs to sample heart rate every five seconds. The point is pattern-spotting over weeks rather than a single reading at a single moment, which feeds the Readiness app: a morning score for how recovered you are.

Sleep score and sleep apnea notifications are the other headline, and here is the useful surprise: both are on the SE 3 too. Apple did not fence overnight health tracking off behind the expensive models. If sleep is what you care about, the AED 999 watch also does it.

The UAE catch you need to know about

Hypertension notifications do not work in the UAE at launch, on Series 12 or Ultra 4. Apple’s own wording is that additional regulatory clearances are in process and availability is expected next year.

This matters because hypertension notifications were among the most heavily marketed health features at launch. If it is your reason for upgrading, you are buying a promise with no confirmed date. It is the same pattern as Apple Intelligence, which still does not support Arabic — features that headline the keynote and then arrive here later, or not at all.

Where the SE 3 stops

At AED 999, the SE 3 offers the best value in its range and, for most first-time buyers, is the right watch. It has the Always-On Retina display, 5G, sleep score, sleep apnea notifications, crash and fall detection, Siri, and Apple Pay.

What it lacks: no ECG, no Blood Oxygen, no Readiness app, no Health Sensing System, no hypertension notifications, and it runs the older S10 chip with 1,000 nits rather than 2,000. The battery lasts 18 hours, compared to the Series 12’s 24. It is a fitness and notifications watch, not a clinical-adjacent one.

The AED 600 step-up to the Series 12 buys the sensors.

Ultra 4 is a battery product

Everything else on the Ultra 4 is shared with the Series 12 — same S11, same Health Sensing System, same sensors, same UAE hypertension restriction. What AED 1,600 more buys you is endurance and armour.

Up to 50 hours of normal use against 24, up to 84 hours in Low Power Mode, and 18 hours of standard workout tracking, stretching to 45 hours in Max Extended Workout mode, which Apple points out is enough to finish a 100-mile race. Fifteen minutes on the charger returns 18 hours.

Then the build: a 49mm aerospace-grade titanium case in natural or black, a sapphire crystal display at 3,000 nits, MIL-STD-810H testing, an action button, and satellite communications for messaging when there is no network at all — which is the feature that matters if your weekends are in the Hajar Mountains or the Empty Quarter rather than on a treadmill.

If you charge your watch every night without thinking about it and your longest workout is an hour, none of this is worth AED 1,600.

Should you upgrade from what you already own?

From a Series 11 or Ultra 3: no. The sensors are genuinely new, but the feature that most justifies them is switched off in this market. Wait for hypertension clearance and reassess next year when you might also pick up a discount.

From a Series 9 or older: yes, and the jump is large — better battery, a much brighter display, sleep apnea notifications, and the new sensing platform.

From no Apple Watch at all: start at the SE 3 unless you specifically want ECG or recovery tracking.

The verdict

Buy the SE 3 for AED 999 if this is your first Apple Watch, if it is for a teenager, or if you want notifications, activity rings, sleep score, and Apple Pay without paying for clinical sensors.

Buy the Series 12 at AED 1,599 if you track recovery and want ECG, Blood Oxygen and the Readiness app in a watch you can wear with a suit. This is the one most people should buy.

Buy the Ultra 4 at AED 3,199 if you dive, hike, run long, travel constantly, or simply refuse to charge nightly. Buy it for the battery, the titanium and the satellite link — not for health features, which are identical to the Series 12’s.
