Apple Watch Series 12 starts at AED 1,599 in the UAE, with pre-orders open now and stores stocking it on Friday 18 September. It gets a new Health Sensing System, the S11 chip, a daily readiness score — and one notable gap for buyers here: hypertension notifications are not cleared for the UAE at launch.

Comparing costs? We have collected every UAE price Apple announced on the night, watches included, and the live blog from the keynote covers how each one was revealed.

Training longer or going off-grid? Compare it with Apple Watch Ultra 4 at AED 3,199, which shares these sensors but doubles the battery.

Hypertension notifications are missing in the UAE

Apple’s own footnotes confirm it: Hypertension Notifications will not be available in the UAE at launch on either Apple Watch Series 12 or Ultra 4, because additional regulatory clearances are still in process. Apple expects the feature next year.

This is the pattern for health features here — ECG and sleep apnoea notifications both arrived in the UAE after their launch markets, gated on clearance rather than hardware. The sensors in the watch on your wrist are capable; the software switch is off until the regulator says otherwise. If high blood pressure detection is the reason you were upgrading, that reason does not apply until 2027.

Readiness: a 0–10 score for the day ahead

Readiness is the flagship new feature. It blends recent activity, training load, vitals and sleep score into one number from 0 to 10, with a plain-language verdict: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It. It updates through the day rather than sitting frozen from the morning, so a brutal 6am session or a shift in daytime vitals moves it, and you can tap in to see which factors are pulling the score around.

Apple says the algorithm was built on data from the Apple Heart and Movement Study with its own exercise scientists and physicians. Whoop, Oura and Garmin have all sold this idea for years; the difference here is that the score is free with the watch rather than behind a subscription.

The sensing hardware behind it

Series 12 is re-architected around a Health Sensing System with new optical and electrical heart sensors. Larger, more efficient green LEDs let it measure heart rate every five seconds all day, which feeds a new heart rate complication and makes the Move and Exercise rings more accurate. HRV is sampled up to 24 times more often and split in two: recovery HRV for daily stress and recovery signals, overall HRV for the longer cardiovascular picture.

Apple claims the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable, citing a study of more than 1,000 participants against leading rivals, and the most accurate step tracking of any smartwatch after a rebuilt pedometer model. Both are Apple-run tests, so treat them as claims until independent testing lands — but the five-second sampling interval is a hardware fact, and it is the kind of change that shows up in the data rather than the marketing.

Battery, and the charging number that matters

All-day life stays at 24 hours, but outdoor workout battery is up 25 per cent to 10 hours, which finally makes an unaccompanied marathon or a long ride on the Al Qudra loop comfortable. Charging is the more useful improvement for everyone else: 15 minutes now returns up to 12 hours, half again more than Series 11, which is the difference between charging while you shower and remembering to charge at all.

Ceramic, dark bronze, and Ceramic Shield 2

Sizes stay 42mm and 46mm. Aluminium comes in new dark bronze, black and light gold alongside space grey, titanium in a new radiant gold plus natural, and for the first time there is a ceramic Series 12 in pearl white and night blue, shipping with sand or navy Sport Bands that use a ceramic pin-and-tuck closure. Aluminium models move to Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says is 60 per cent tougher than the Ion-X glass on Series 11.

Bands get olive, burgundy, wildflower blue and pale succulent Sport Bands, plaid Sport Loops in burgundy and light umber, a radiant gold and a dark bronze Milanese Loop, and a woven Modern Buckle with gold hardware. Apple Watch Hermès Series 12 adds radiant gold titanium and a Rocabar Club band.

Sound Recognition, Shazam, and where the audio goes

The S11 chip brings Sound Recognition to the watch, alerting deaf and hard-of-hearing users to sirens, alarms, doorbells or a baby crying without an iPhone nearby, plus automatic Shazam in the Smart Stack. Apple says no audio recordings are created or stored: processing happens in Secure Exclave, a hardware-isolated compartment on the S11 that deletes the audio immediately and keeps it out of reach of the OS, apps and Apple itself.

watchOS 27 arrives free on Monday 14 September for Series 9 and later, SE 3 and Ultra 2 and later, adding a single-handed tap gesture, a dynamic app grid, perimenopause and menopause support in Cycle Tracking, and Workout Buddy without an iPhone nearby. It lands the same day as iOS 27 and the iPhone 18 Pro.

Apple announced the Series 12 alongside the Ultra 4, AirPods 5 and two new iPhones — we covered all of it as it happened in our iPhone 18 event live blog.
