Does the popular reality show still have a place in the audience's hearts after five seasons? The answer is a resounding, "Yes."
The Good
- Entertaining
- Guilty pleasure entertainment
The Bad
- Questionable editing choices
Netflix’s hit reality TV series, Love is Blind, first rose to international fame thanks to its novel concept and dramatic exploits typical of any self-respecting dating show. The Chris Coelen-created show follows a typical social experiment format where a group of people “date” without seeing each other and only get to meet after one of them proposes.
However, after a highly controversial fifth season, some questioned whether the series would still have a space in the audience’s hearts. Based on the show’s newest episodes, it seems like the answer is a resounding “Yes.”
We all know the format. A cast of 15 men and 15 women gets to talk to each other through a wall while inside little comfortable rooms known as pods. As the days go by, connections are forged, love triangles complicate matters, and eventually, a handful of couples walk out of the pods as fiances.
From then, they have four weeks before their Netflix-sponsored weddings. At the altar, the couple must decide whether to proceed with the marriage.
This season’s cast includes real estate broker AD, customer support manager Sarah Ann, account director Laura, executive assistant/ single mom Jessica, and flight attendant Chelsea.
Among the men looking for love on the show are financial advisor Matthew, school principal Kenneth, software salesman Jimmy, “suave” entrepreneur Clay, and project manager Trevor.
During most of the six episodes of Netflix released this week, we watched the cast members date inside the pods, where no less than four love triangles formed, each more dramatic than the next. Ultimately, five couples decided to get engaged, some appearing more compatible than others.
A fun-to-watch new season
Like most reality TV series, Love is Blind is highly edited. However, season six did make some interesting and harder-to-understand editing choices. For example, when one woman found out the man she liked was repeating the same cheesy lines to another cast member, the show didn’t bother to show us footage of the “offense.” And some of the cast’s conversations are so ripped away from any context, that what they’re saying makes very little sense to the casual observer.
Season 6 still delivers all the dramatics that made the show a phenomenon in the first place. There are intense emotional outbursts, people who’ve had too much to drink saying things they probably shouldn’t in front of cameras, cheating scandals, and wholesome romantic moments to make fans forget about their laptop’s pause button.
Most of the season’s cast members appear genuinely interested in finding love, and their interactions with one another are mostly respectful. Nothing particularly heavy or uncomfortable happens but it’s still entertaining enough to keep you invested in their fake reality TV love stories.
While some of these couples are mismatched, the show has produced a few semi-successful relationships and marriages. As of the time of writing, eight couples who met on the show are still together. That’s not bad, considering the nature of reality TV.
