Edgar Wright says the new 4K remaster of Spaced is “not authorized by anyone involved in making the show”. GamesRadar+ first reported his post on X, a reply to a fan about the Blu-ray now up for pre-order on Amazon UK.
Wright wanted this release himself. He wrote that he “had been pushing to do a Blu-Ray of SPACED for years”, so finding out that someone “just went ahead without our involvement” was “a bummer”.
According to GamesRadar+, it was news to fellow Spaced alumni such as Simon Pegg and Nick Frost too. Asked how it could happen without his knowledge, Wright said: “It’s a Channel 4 show… We were all very involved in the previous editions, but not this one.”
The sitcom ran from 1999 to 2001 and was shot on standard-definition DigiBeta cameras. GamesRadar+ says the Amazon listing describes an upscale to 4K “using a proprietary AI algorithm”, and British label All3 Media is behind the release. The listing itself promises “a combination of traditional and proprietary tools” and “algorithmic corrections” enhanced “frame by frame by a manual operator”. GamesRadar+ called that “a whole lot of words not to say AI”.
Extras are the other loss. Spaced’s original DVD boxset was packed with hours of them, including commentaries with Wright, Pegg, and Frost alongside fans like Diablo Cody, Kevin Smith, and Matt Stone. The new edition won’t have fresh contributions from the makers, and it’s unclear why.
According to GamesRadar+, All3 Media and Channel 4 haven’t commented, but it’s unclear how the release was cleared. The 4K Spaced launches in the UK on 27 February 2027.
