Yoshinori Kitase, the producer of the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy and director of the 1997 original, says Square Enix is more likely to spend its development budget on fresh games than on another round of remakes. He made the comments to IGN at Lucca Comics & Games 2026, in an interview IGN reports on here. He stopped short of ruling remakes out.
Asked about the company’s plans beyond the trilogy, Kitase told IGN, “we are more likely to invest in new titles and new games.” He then qualified it with the Final Fantasy VII project itself: he and other creators from the original team felt strongly about the game and wanted new players to discover its appeal, while long-time fans got something fresh too. In his words, the company may still back remakes in cases like that one, alongside other kinds of games.
He was also asked about adaptations. Kitase said the remake explored the world of Final Fantasy VII far more deeply than the original did, so games or TV series inspired by the story would be welcome in future. “I don’t see why that should not be a possibility,” he said. He didn’t name a project or a partner, so there’s nothing concrete to track yet.
A separate interview with Kitase at Lucca, published by Italian outlet Open, points the same way. As Open reports it, Kitase said the core team could keep working together on something new in the Final Fantasy world. That fits his IGN remarks, though neither interview names a specific game.
The comments land while the current trilogy is still unfinished. Final Fantasy VII Revelation is due on 28 April 2027, according to IGN, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. As we’ve covered, it’s set to arrive on every platform at once, a break from the timed PlayStation exclusivity of the first two games. If you’re picking up the PS5 version on disc, note that the disc needs a download.
Kitase isn’t the only senior figure thinking about what comes next. Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi has said his own next project won’t be a remake and could be a new large-scale RPG. Taken together, the producer and the director both describe a studio looking beyond Final Fantasy VII, even if neither has announced anything.
Is Square Enix done making remakes?
No. Kitase told IGN the company may still invest in remaking older games when the original creators feel strongly about them, as happened with Final Fantasy VII. He added that new titles are the more likely focus.
Is there a Final Fantasy VII movie or TV series planned?
Nothing has been announced. Kitase said he’d like to see games or TV series inspired by the story in future and didn’t see why that couldn’t happen, but he gave no details.
When does Final Fantasy VII Revelation come out?
IGN lists 28 April 2027 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Square Enix hasn’t announced UAE pricing in the material we’ve seen.
