Santa Monica Studio has pushed God of War Laufey back by three months, moving the PS5 game from 16 February 2027 to 20 May 2027. The studio announced the change in a post on X on 4 November, and VGC was among the first to report it.
The studio’s statement is short on specifics. It thanks fans for the response since June’s reveal, then says the extra months will go on “the finishing touches” and pushing the game to its fullest potential. No bug, scope or technical problem is named, and the studio says only that it will “be back to share more updates soon”. Other outlets, including TheGamer, describe it as a three-month delay to 20 May.
A date that was only recently locked in
The original date is only a few months old. After the June State of Play reveal showed more than 20 minutes of gameplay, Sony confirmed 16 February at San Diego Comic-Con, as we reported in our release-date story. Pre-orders then opened on 29 September with a bonus armour set and a Digital Deluxe tier, as we covered at the time. Launch was roughly three and a half months away when the studio moved it.
The delay doesn’t reopen the physical-copy question. Santa Monica confirmed in July that Laufey would ship on disc, which came after Sony’s plan to stop producing physical games. Wikipedia’s summary of that plan says Sony would release games only digitally from January 2028, and May 2027 still lands well before that.
What Laufey is
The game is the first mainline God of War to star someone other than Kratos. Players control Faye (Laufey the Just), Kratos’s Norse wife and Atreus’s mother, who dies in the events leading up to the 2018 game. Sony’s synopsis has her waking after her own funeral in the Everywhen, an afterlife where gods from across mythology compete for power, and finding that the plans she made to protect Kratos and Atreus are now at risk.
The shift away from Kratos was already a talking point, and the game’s director has addressed the reaction to Faye’s casting as lead. Santa Monica Studio’s creative head Cory Barlog has also said Kratos will star in the next God of War, which follows Laufey’s story directly. That game has no title or date.
What to do if you’ve pre-ordered
Laufey remains announced for PS5 only, with no PS4 or PC version confirmed. If you pre-ordered in the UAE, we recommend checking the PlayStation Store listing for the updated release date before you plan your time off for February. With three extra months, there’s also room to finish God of War Ragnarök first, if you haven’t already.
What is the new God of War Laufey release date?
Santa Monica Studio says God of War Laufey now launches on 20 May 2027. It was previously scheduled for 16 February 2027.
Is God of War Laufey coming to PC or PS4?
No. The game has only been announced for PS5, and Sony has not confirmed a PS4 or PC version. Santa Monica confirmed in July that a disc edition will be available.
Do I need to play the earlier God of War games first?
PlayStation says Laufey can be enjoyed as a standalone game, though it recommends the Norse games for extra context about the world and characters.
