God of War Laufey Director Responds to Backlash Over Kratos Taking a Back Seat

God of War Laufey director Ariel Lawrence has responded to the skepticism surrounding the recently revealed PS5 game, acknowledging that some fans remain unconvinced by the decision to place Faye at the centre of the story rather than Kratos.

The game was officially unveiled during PlayStation's latest State of Play presentation, where it served as the showcase's final major announcement. God of War Laufey follows Faye, also known as LLaufey, and runs parallel to the events of the two most recent God of War games.

While the reveal generated plenty of interest, some of the discussion has centred on whether a God of War game without Kratos as its primary playable character can deliver the same appeal. Other fans have questioned whether the game feels distinct enough from the recent entries, particularly as it retains the continuous one-shot camera style used in God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok.

Ariel Lawrence Says the Team Understands the Reaction

Speaking to GameSpot, Lawrence said she understands why some players are approaching the game cautiously but hopes they remain open to the new story.

“I understand the skepticism,” Lawrence said. “I hope they will give it a chance and be excited to play.”

Lawrence added that the team wants to preserve a sense of mystery around the game rather than revealing exactly how its story will unfold ahead of launch. She said the main question for the developers is whether the game offers a fun adventure that feels like something players have not experienced before.

In a separate interview with GamesRadar, Lawrence acknowledged that fans have built a strong connection with the God of War series and its characters over the years. However, she also described the intensity of the response as a positive sign, arguing that strong opinions show how much people still care about the franchise.

God of War Laufey is Not Replacing Kratos

Although Laufey places Faye in the lead role, Santa Monica Studio has indicated that Kratos remains an important part of the wider God of War franchise. The studio has also confirmed that there are more stories involving Kratos still to come.

God of War Laufey appears to be designed as a companion story rather than a replacement for the main series. Its narrative runs alongside the Norse-era games, which could allow the developers to revisit familiar events from a different perspective while filling in parts of Faye's history that were previously left unexplored.

God of War Laufey is currently in development for PS5. Sony and Santa Monica Studio have not yet announced a release date.
