The ending leaves Ned’s memories unresolved
Batalon says the final handshake does not provide a definitive answer about whether Ned remembers Peter. Speaking in a spoiler interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he described the moment as open-ended and left its meaning to the audience.
Doctor Strange’s spell remains in effect throughout the film, leaving Ned and MJ without conscious memories of Peter Parker. Peter therefore interacts with Ned as his invented neighbour, Maynard, and as Spider-Man before finally introducing himself as Peter in the closing bodega scene.
The pair then perform their familiar sequence of hand clasps, fist bumps, and finger guns. Ned responds with “Peter?”, creating the impression that something has returned — although Batalon offers several possible readings. Ned may genuinely recognise his former best friend, his body may remember the handshake, or he may simply repeat the name Peter has just given him.
Batalon leans only slightly towards recognition, suggesting there could be a “little glimmer” in Ned’s response. That restraint serves the scene well: the emotional connection is visible, while the spell remains intact enough to keep the future messy. Spider-Man stories do enjoy giving Peter one nice moment and immediately attaching paperwork to it.
Spidey Tracker points beyond Earth
The animated post-credits scene uses Batalon’s modulated voice and implies that Spider-Man, or a Spider-Man, is off-world. The sequence centres on Ned’s tracking app, Spidey Tracker, which monitors the Wall-Crawler’s location and activity.
The off-world reading has prompted speculation about Spider-Man appearing in Avengers: Secret Wars. Batalon offers no confirmation, however, and says he has not been given additional information about what Ned’s technology is foreshadowing.
The safest reading is that the scene establishes a future mystery rather than identifying which Spider-Man has left Earth or where he has gone. Stay through the credits, but perhaps leave the conspiracy corkboard at home for one evening.
A quiet character scene stopped filming for a day
Production paused for a day after an earlier version of a scene involving Ned, MJ, and Spider-Man failed to feel natural. Batalon identified it as the sequence that now shows Ned and a masked Spider-Man building Star Wars Lego sets and quoting The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring while MJ draws them with Spider-Man unmasked.
Batalon said the first version did not feel as organic or real as the cast expected. Director Destin Daniel Cretton, on-set writer Justin Kuritzkes, and the performers stopped filming, shared ideas, and reconceived the scene before it was rewritten.
The anecdote explains why such a modest sequence received unusual attention. Brand New Day asks Ned, MJ, and Peter to recover some of their old chemistry without erasing the consequences of Doctor Strange’s spell. If that interaction felt false, the emotional logic surrounding the ending would have suffered with it.
The finished scene therefore does more than provide references for Star Wars and Tolkien fans to spot. It rebuilds the trio’s rhythm under very different circumstances, helping the closing handshake feel familiar even while its meaning remains unresolved.
