Brand New Day Hid Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey Role — Barely

Kevin Feige says Marvel hid Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey role to protect the opening-weekend surprise after Brand New Day’s $930 million debut.

Spoiler warning: This article reveals Sadie Sink’s role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Brand New Day saved its Jean Grey reveal for cinemas

Sadie Sink plays Jean Grey, the telepathic X-Men character who serves as Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s villain. Marvel Studios kept the character’s identity out of its official pre-release messaging, even as reports and fan theories repeatedly landed on the correct answer.

The Jean Grey speculation surrounding Sink had become difficult to ignore before the premiere. Marvel still declined to confirm it, kept Sink’s presence in the marketing unusually quiet, and occasionally poked fun at how determined everyone was to solve the mystery.

The internet had the answer, then, but Marvel retained the official reveal for the film itself. That is secrecy by superhero-movie standards: millions of people can guess correctly, provided nobody in charge nods too enthusiastically.

Sink’s character is an antagonist in Brand New Day, although viewers hoping to avoid further plot details should stop digging now. The reveal itself is the headline; the film handles the consequences.

Kevin Feige says the secrecy protected opening weekend

Kevin Feige says Marvel concealed Sink’s role to create the best possible opening-weekend experience for audiences. “It’s purely about creating the best possible opening weekend experience for the audience,” the Marvel Studios boss said in an interview with Variety.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton had previously said there was a “very real reason” not to identify Sink’s character. Feige’s explanation, as reported by our sister site IGN Middle East, confirms that the immediate goal was preserving the theatrical surprise.

Feige also attached longer-term significance to the casting. “Sadie’s character is one that our fans know has immense significance within the Marvel Universe, and she plays a key role in the future of the MCU,” he said.

That future role remains Marvel’s stated plan rather than a list of announced projects. Feige did not identify where Jean Grey will appear next, but his comments position Sink’s casting as more than a one-film surprise.

The $927 million opening makes Marvel’s strategy defensible

Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened worldwide to a reported $927 million, including $355 million in the US and Canada and $572 million internationally. ABC News reported those figures and ranked the film as the second-largest global opening ever.

The total differs slightly from Marvel-linked promotional material and the source interview’s rounded $930 million figure, but both place the film within reach of $1 billion after its first weekend. Its cumulative total beyond that opening was not disclosed in the interview.

For UAE audiences, Gulf News listed Spider-Man: Brand New Day among the UAE cinema releases arriving on 30 July 2026. The local date came one day before the film’s stated 31 July global premiere.

Marvel’s secrecy could not stop the theories, but it preserved the studio’s official confirmation until audiences could encounter Jean Grey in the film. With that opening behind it, Feige can reasonably argue that the reveal became part of a remarkably successful cinema weekend.
