Duane “Keffe D” Davis has been found guilty of first-degree murder in the 1996 killing of rapper and actor Tupac Shakur. The Las Vegas jury reached its verdict after less than three hours of deliberation.

Davis, now 63, was charged with one count of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon and the intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang. Prosecutors argued that he helped organise the shooting and passed a gun to the back seat of the white Cadillac that pursued Shakur and Death Row Records executive Marion “Suge” Knight.
The prosecution did not argue that Davis fired the shot. The suspected shooter was never named, while Davis’ nephew Orlando Anderson — one of the men linked to the car — died in a 1998 gang shootout in Compton, California.
The Duane Davis Tupac case was built largely around Davis’ own public accounts, including his 2019 memoir Compton Street Legend and recordings of conversations with investigators. Davis told police that he and three other men went looking for Shakur after a fight involving his nephew. One of the men in the back seat opened fire when they found Shakur and Knight’s car.
Reuters reported that the jury heard an 11-day case before reaching its verdict. Defence lawyer Michael Sanft argued that Davis’ memoir was “fiction and not fact”, while prosecutors said Davis had repeatedly placed himself in the vehicle and described the events.

Davis faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Judge Carli Kierny scheduled his sentencing for October 13, 2026. Davis told the judge he plans to appeal.
Shakur was killed on September 7, 1996, after being shot in a drive-by attack near the Las Vegas Strip. He was 25. The case remained unsolved for almost three decades before Davis was arrested and charged in 2023.
The conviction resolves the criminal case against the only person ever charged in Shakur’s killing, although the identity of the gunman remains unconfirmed in the public record. AP reported that the three other men believed to have been in the car are now dead.
Shakur released four solo studio albums before his death and also acted in films including Juice, Poetic Justice and Above the Rim. His music and film work kept the case in public view long after the investigation stalled.
