The Resident Evil 2026 box office is tracking to open at $40 million to $50 million in North America, which would make it the biggest opening weekend of any Resident Evil film yet. The forecast comes from Box Office Pro, and the low end alone would comfortably clear the franchise record. It is a step up from the trade’s earlier $30 million to $40 million range.
Why tracking is running hot
Cregger arrives with momentum. Weapons opened to $43.5 million domestically last year and finished with $270 million worldwide, and the Resident Evil campaign has leaned into that run. The Quorum’s eight-week tracking chart shows the film at 51 per cent awareness and 52 per cent interest, the highest scores on the board.
The Resident Evil 2026 box office in context
No previous Resident Evil film has crossed $27 million in its opening frame. Afterlife holds the record at $26.65 million from 2010, with Extinction and Apocalypse both around $23 million, the 2002 original at $17.7 million and Welcome to Raccoon City the lowest at $5.3 million. The 95-minute runtime was built for speed, and the first-person sequences leaned into the games.
The reboot follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier whose delivery run into Raccoon City goes wrong, with Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser alongside. Cregger has been open about not trying to adapt the games directly:
“I am not trying to adapt a video game, I’m not using the characters from the games. I’m not telling a story that the games tell because I’m not going to be able to do it better than the games. The games are so well executed, and to me, Leon and Claire and these characters, they exist so perfectly in the games that anyone I cast and any difference that I do with them would be, probably, to the detriment of what I was trying to do.”
