IGN reports that fresh video of Cregger discussing the horror adaptation cuts to several first-person shots: a double-barrelled shotgun raised as Austin Abrams’ Bryan moves through a house, and later a pistol held in front of the camera as a zombie woman leaps at it. The footage comes from the official Resident Evil X account.

Cregger frames the choice as a nod to how the games arm players. Resident Evil typically starts with a simple pistol before granting a shotgun and later a machine gun; Bryan’s first undead is the woman he hits on the road, and the shotgun he finds comes from the house he shelters in.
First person is not new territory for the series, which has moved well beyond the fixed cameras of the original. Several recent entries use the view, and it is optional in this year’s Resident Evil Requiem.
Umbrella is on the paperwork
The same update reveals a second detail: a delivery note for Bryan’s medical cargo, billed to “Umbrella Corp.” It is deliberately the sort of collectible players find in the games.
Umbrella’s presence was always likely β the film is set in Raccoon City during the zombie outbreak. How much the company features remains to be seen. Cregger has repeatedly said the film will not cross paths with known characters or retell story from the games. The reboot is an alternate-universe take: the outbreak hits a snow-covered, modern-day Raccoon City where characters carry smartphones. In the games, it happens in September 1998.
Resident Evil is in cinemas from September 18, filmed for IMAX. The first trailer introduced Bryan as an everyman with no combat experience. Last month Cregger revealed that a stunt during filming nearly killed Abrams.
