Lucy Davis, best known as Dawn Tinsley in the original UK version of The Office, has revealed she has terminal cancer. In an Instagram post on Tuesday, the 53-year-old said her stage 4 breast cancer is incurable and “too late for chemo”.
The post included a video of Davis ringing a hospital bell and reading the traditional verse that marks the end of treatment. She said she was diagnosed about a year and a half ago, and that the cancer has spread to her bones — specifically her spine, right hip and ribs.
“The cancer is incurable, and too late for chemo. The initial lump that I felt wasn’t a ‘lump’ as such; rather a kind of hard spot. Really tiny. I almost didn’t bother getting it checked. So I guess I’m saying don’t ignore anything — get everything checked out.”

Davis said she is trying to live out “whatever might be left” of her life “in as fun a way as I possibly can”. She has asked her friends and family to make fun of her and, above all, not to treat her like a sick person. Standing and walking for long periods have become hard, and she sometimes needs a wheelchair.
“I’m not scared of whatever comes next. I’m at peace with it. I’ll see my Gracie sooner than expected, and for me, leaving my physical body just means going home,” she wrote. “Any and all grieving is for my family; it’s far harder for them than for me.”
She intends to keep working. “Acting is one of the biggest joys in my life,” she said, and she plans to continue her animal-rights work.
From The Office to Wonder Woman
Davis has been acting since the early 1990s. She played Dawn Tinsley, the receptionist at the Slough paper company, across The Office’s two series and its Christmas specials from 2001 to 2003 — the character whose US counterpart, Pam Beesly, was played by Jenna Fischer. She went on to appear as Dianne in Shaun of the Dead (2004), Etta Candy in Wonder Woman (2017) and Hilda Spellman in Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. More recently she played Eva in the Disney Channel series The Villains of Valley View. Her credits number more than 60.
