Spider-Man Brand New Day has made $2.4 billion worldwide, and Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman says its emotional core is more important than the superhero spectacle. In an interview reported by IGN, Rothman described Peter Parker as “a lonely guy” whose story connected with audiences around the world.

Why Spider-Man Brand New Day connected with audiences

Rothman made the comments at the Lumiere Summit, where he discussed the film’s performance and the wider return of cinema crowds. Variety’s report quotes him describing the film as “not so much a superhero film, but ‘super-person’ film”.

The film follows Peter after the memory-wipe spell at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home. He is separated from the people he loves and spends much of the story dealing with the consequences. The costume and set pieces are still present, but Rothman said the audience response came from the character’s loneliness, friendship and emotional life.

“It’s got plenty of whiz-bang, but that’s not what the secret is,” Rothman said. “The secret is it’s a relatable story that almost everybody has related to.” The result has been unusually large even by Spider-Man standards: the film has passed $2.4 billion globally, including $923 million in the US and Canada, according to the reports.

Sony sees more than superhero spectacle

Rothman also used the film’s performance as evidence that audiences will still turn out for theatrical releases when the film gives them a reason to go. He pointed to other successful 2026 films, including The Odyssey, Obsession and Toy Story 5, rather than presenting Spider-Man Brand New Day as a one-film exception.

The film is not yet available to stream. Sony has not announced a home-entertainment date. For more coverage, see Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s $2 billion box office milestone and Tom Holland’s reported Brand New Day salary.
