Windows 11 26H2 arrives this autumn as a lightweight enablement package for most PCs, Microsoft has confirmed ahead of the fall rollout. On machines already running version 25H2 or 24H2 — which share the same servicing branch — the update is a 174KB feature flip rather than a full reinstall.
Why Windows 11 26H2 is so small
Microsoft has shifted how it ships Windows feature updates since 24H2, the last release built on a fresh branch and one that spent about a year being patched for the problems it introduced. Newer versions run on a shared servicing branch: 25H2 and 26H2 are the same source code as 24H2, with features turned on rather than rewritten.

Microsoft, in a servicing document seen by Windows Latest, confirmed that moving from 25H2 to 26H2 introduces features “without regressions or compatibility issues” because both are the same codebase. An issue affecting 26H2 affects 25H2 too, and the same update package fixes both.
Who gets the tiny update
The size depends on which version you are running. Devices on 24H2 or 25H2 get 26H2 as an enablement package of roughly 174KB — Microsoft describes it as “three-thousandths of one percent” of the full update — because almost all of the code is already on the PC, sitting dormant until it is enabled.

PCs still on 22H2 or 23H2, which sit on an older branch, get 26H2 as a full feature update of close to 6.5GB instead. gHacks notes 26H2 adds no new hardware requirements, so eligible PCs carry over without changes.
What actually changes
Little, at launch. Features ship to 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 at the same time via the monthly cumulative update — the same channel that has brought its own problems, as August’s update breaking games showed — so 26H2 mostly resets the support clock rather than adding headline features. The one notable exception: point-in-time restore, Microsoft’s fuller take on System Restore, is enabled by default on 26H2, including on enterprise PCs.
What it means for UAE users
For anyone in the UAE running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, expect a quick feature-flip update rather than a big download — a minute or two of fetching, one restart, and the build number changes. 24H2’s Home and Pro support ends on 13 October 2026, so UAE users still on that version should move to a supported release before then rather than wait out the clock. The update will appear in Windows Update and roll out gradually, so it not showing up immediately is staging, not a fault.
