Warren Spector, the designer behind Deus Ex and a co-creator of System Shock, is retiring from game development. He announced it on LinkedIn on Monday night, with the usual caveat: he has been here before and changed his mind, but this time he is pretty sure he means it.
Spector’s career spans 44 years. He moved from tabletop RPGs to Origin Systems in 1989, where he co-produced Ultima 6 and Wing Commander, then went on to direct Deus Ex at Ion Storm and work on System Shock, Thief: Deadly Shadows and Crusader: No Remorse. He served as creative director on Disney’s Epic Mickey and co-founded OtherSide Entertainment. He puts the count at 17 full games and “9 or so” add-on packs, with teams ranging from a dozen people to 800.

Why Warren Spector is retiring
I definitely have mixed feelings about this. I mean there are three games in particular I’d still like to make. (One is very big… one is very small… and one I don’t know how to make which scares me.) But the game business has changed and it’s just not as much fun for me anymore. Plus there’s a new generation of developers coming up who deserve their time in the sun.

Age and health are also factors, he wrote, and he feels he has done what he set out to do. What comes next is books, reading, lecturing, possibly some consulting, and “a keyboard here just waiting for me to get my piano chops back”. On a return: “Will I come back? Never say never.”
Warren Spector’s last game
His final release was Thick As Thieves, a stealth heist game that launched in May. Weeks later, OtherSide confirmed it had laid off the majority of its staff and ended planned post-launch development. His long-planned System Shock 3 has been effectively dead since 2022, when he acknowledged it was unlikely to happen.

His parting advice to the developers coming up behind him, via Video Games Chronicle: “your job is to make people forget people like me ever existed.” The full statement is on his LinkedIn page, as Aftermath and Shacknews noted in their coverage.
