A fresh report says Destin Daniel Cretton is expected to direct Spider-Man 5, bringing back the filmmaker behind Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Marvel and Sony have not formally announced the film, however, and there is no release date.
Spider-Man 5 director: what the report says
Deadline reports that Cretton is among the projects being lined up after directing Brand New Day, which was released on 31 July. IGN’s report also says that Cretton is expected to return, making him the reported Spider-Man 5 director.
Cretton is already attached to direct Lionsgate’s live-action Naruto film, while Deadline reports that he is developing a Hawaii Five-O film for Paramount. That schedule leaves the next Spider-Man film without a confirmed production start, even if Marvel and Sony want Cretton back.
No Spider-Man 5 script or release date yet
Producer Amy Pascal reportedly told Deadline: “There’s no writers room. If we have our way, he certainly will be.” Cretton has also said he would be open to making another Marvel film, but neither comment confirms a deal.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously said there are “always plans” for another Spider-Man film, while Holland and Zendaya have expressed interest in returning. Those comments point to an ongoing conversation rather than a finished production package.
A 2029 release has been suggested by some reports because Cretton’s Naruto film is expected to take priority before Spider-Man 5. That date is not confirmed, and Marvel’s release calendar could change before the project reaches cameras.
For now, Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s success has made another Holland-led film a reasonable expectation. Tom Holland’s future in the role is still being worked out one contract at a time.
