RJ Mitte, who played Walter “Flynn” White Jr. in Breaking Bad, has died aged 34. His representative confirmed his death on 12 October in Brownsville, Texas, and remembered him as an actor, philanthropist, and disability rights advocate.

According to the BBC, Mitte’s publicist confirmed that he died by suicide. Separately, local broadcaster KRGV reported that Brownsville police said the cause and manner of death remained pending an official determination. The investigation is ongoing; the publicist’s account is not a final finding from the authorities.

In Associated Press reporting carried by NPR, Cameron County Justice of the Peace Cyndi Hinojosa said she declared Mitte dead on Monday afternoon. She could not provide a cause of death and said an autopsy would be performed.

A defining role in Breaking Bad

Mitte appeared across all five seasons of the AMC drama, which ran from 2008 to 2013. His character was the teenage son of Bryan Cranston’s Walter White, a chemistry teacher whose cancer diagnosis set him on a path into the methamphetamine trade.

Walter Jr. gave the series a perspective outside his father’s criminal life. His scenes centred on the White family’s relationships and the consequences of Walter’s decisions, rather than the drug operation itself. Mitte played the character for 56 episodes.

Both Mitte and his character had cerebral palsy. His experience informed a performance in which the character’s disability was part of his life, rather than his entire identity. Representative Sean Reilly told the BBC that Mitte “brought authenticity to the role and built a platform on disability awareness and inclusion”.

The series has continued to generate discussion long after its finale. Earlier this year, tbreak covered Cranston’s defence of Skyler White against fan hostility, another debate about how viewers understood the show’s family characters.

Acting and advocacy beyond the series

Mitte’s screen credits included Hannah Montana, Switched at Birth, Now Apocalypse, and This Close. He also appeared in films including Triumph and The Oak Room, extending his career beyond the role that made him widely recognisable.

Away from acting, he served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s. He also led The Mitte Foundation, supporting philanthropic work and community initiatives. His representatives described an effort to challenge stereotypes and improve representation for people with disabilities.

Other members of the Breaking Bad cast have continued into new television projects, including Aaron Paul’s announced role in Fallout season three. Mitte’s later work combined screen roles with advocacy focused on opportunities for disabled performers.

Has an official cause of death been determined?

The reporting reviewed for this article does not establish a final official finding. An autopsy and the police investigation were pending, separately from the publicist’s account.
