Qatar Airways Starlink coverage now extends to 150 widebody aircraft, after the carrier completed the rollout on its Boeing 787-8 sub-fleet in seven months and introduced the world’s first Starlink-fitted Boeing 787-9.

The Doha-based carrier is more than 83 per cent of the way through fitting its 787 fleet and says the programme will finish by the end of 2026, per its announcement. That follows the completion of Starlink installations on the Boeing 777 fleet in nine months and the Airbus A350 fleet in eight months. Qatar Airways now operates the world’s first and largest Starlink-equipped fleets of all three widebody types.

The service is free for passengers and available gate-to-gate, with some local regulatory exceptions. Speeds of up to 500 Mbps are enough for video streaming, video calls and file uploads at 35,000 feet. More than 23 million passengers have connected since the programme launched in October 2024, a figure Gulf News confirmed in its coverage of the milestone.

What this means for travellers

For anyone flying through Doha — and that includes a significant number of UAE passengers connecting to Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas — the Starlink rollout means high-speed Wi-Fi is increasingly available on the aircraft you are most likely to board. Qatar Airways was the first airline to offer Starlink on long-haul and ultra-long-haul routes across six continents, and the 787 milestone extends that coverage to the airline’s newest long-haul workhorse.
