Google AI publisher payments now reach about 100 digital publishers whose work contributes to answers in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini, according to The Verge, citing The Information. Participants say the calculation is not transparent.

Reported publisher outcomeReported payment
Several small and midsize sitesLess than 0.1% of ad revenue
Some smaller sitesUnder $1,000 over several months
Publisher that joined a few months earlier$50,000–$60,000 so far
One early participantMore than $1 million a year

The payout figures come from The Information’s report.

Search Engine Roundtable also quotes the pilot’s help text.

Google AI publisher payments depend on what shapes an answer

Google calls the invite-only test the AI contribution pilot. These Google AI publisher payments appear as a monthly Search Console figure with some history, but no calculation breakdown, Digiday reports. Google calls the pilot an early-stage test of ways to reward high-quality content.

“contributes significantly to the creation of AI-generated responses”

That wording separates content that shapes an answer from a page cited afterwards. Some participants told The Information that monthly payment changes come without an explanation.

Search Console shows AI visibility, not a rate card

Google’s public generative AI performance report measures impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode, not earnings. The separate pilot widget is for participants and also covers Gemini.

Publishers have also questioned the traffic value of AI answers: Reddit has challenged Google’s AI Overviews. Google is also testing AI shortcuts on its Search homepage.

Google has approached publishers directly, with no public sign-up process described. The reporting does not say whether UAE publishers were invited.

What can publishers measure without joining the payment pilot?

Google rolled the public Generative AI performance report out to all websites worldwide on 31 August 2026. It shows impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, date and device; it does not show pilot earnings or Gemini app activity. See Google’s report guide.

Can a publisher opt out of AI Overviews without leaving Google Search?

Google’s Search generative AI control lets a site manage inclusion in AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI features in Discover. Google says this control does not block the site from Search overall, and it is separate from the paid pilot. Google’s guidance.
