I am unsure if it would be wrong to say that Helldivers 2 is this year’s sleeper hit, but no one could have predicted its success, not even the developer Arrowhead Game Studios themselves. The under-marketed and largely unhyped co-op online shooter for the PS5 and PC took the world by storm on release, racking up over 400K concurrent players on Steam alone.
The game has been such a smash-hit success that it caused the servers to crash, and the studios are still scrambling to fix it as more players pile on to provide freedom to the Super Earth.
Helldivers 2 is a 4-player co-op online shooter where players are tasked to “liberate” “hostile” planets of alien bugs and killer robots to bring freedom to the Super Earth, an organization that claims to provide “managed democracy” to humanity.
Its mix of cinematic action, excellent shooting mechanics, varied missions, and tongue-in-cheek humour has won the hearts of critics and players alike. If you want a co-op experience to have a blast with friends, this game seems to fit the bill.
