Amazon Web Services customers around the world briefly saw billing dashboards that would bankrupt a small nation. As PCMag Middle East reports, a glitch that struck on 16–17 July 2026 pushed estimated charges into the billions and, for some, the trillions. One user in India said he saw $1.5tn and that his “soul left my body”; Dan Harvey at UK firm Learning Through Landscapes watched a 43-cent hosting bill balloon to $7.8 billion; a Reddit user claimed a figure north of $7 trillion.
None of it was real. Amazon confirmed on X that the bills were a mistake and that users did not need to take any action, describing it as a “slight miscalculation on our end (very slight).” The company’s Service Health page traced the problem to estimated cost and usage data displayed in the Billing and Cost Management Console, including the Cost and Usage Report. According to reporting by The Guardian, AWS attributed the fault to an issue with unit pricing within its estimated billing computation subsystem.
Was AWS hit in the UAE?
The glitch was global, so UAE AWS customers who checked the Billing Console or Cost Explorer during the incident could have seen inflated estimates like everyone else. AWS and multiple outlets described the fault as affecting customers “around the world,” which covers EMEA accounts. That said, no report in the available coverage names a specific UAE business or developer as having been affected, so there is no basis for claiming identified local victims.
The practical point for UAE firms is that this was a display and estimation failure, not a payment event. Actual invoices, payment processing, and verified usage data were not affected, according to AWS’s own statements — a claim that independent coverage has not contradicted, since no outlet has reported customers actually being debited for astronomical sums. The real risk is behavioural: teams that wire budget alerts and cost anomaly detection to auto-react could, in theory, have scaled down or paused services on the strength of a false signal.
What should you do if you see an inflated AWS bill?
Verify before you act — do not pay, delete resources, or re-architect anything on the basis of a shocking dashboard number. AWS explicitly said no action was required during this incident, and the safest response to any alarming estimate is to confirm it in more than one place.
Check your issued invoices separately from Cost Explorer’s estimated charges, since AWS said the estimates were the only thing that broke. Compare against your per-service usage metrics, and look at the AWS Service Health Dashboard for active billing notices. Because a scary billing alert can also resemble a phishing lure, avoid clicking links in the email itself: type the console address in manually and log in to confirm. If something still looks wrong, open a billing support case rather than reaching for your bank.
The wider lesson is about governance. If your organisation runs automated cost controls, key them off real usage metrics rather than estimated billing figures, and keep a human review step before freezing mission-critical systems. AWS says it paused the affected computations, rolled back the offending change, and began backfilling corrected data — but it has not announced any structural overhaul to stop this recurring. For now, the separation between estimates and actual invoices is doing the reassuring, and that separation was there all along.
