Andrew Garfield has not congratulated Tom Holland on Spider-Man: Brand New Day because he has not seen the film yet, telling IGN he does not want to be “disingenuous”.

The former Spider-Man actor said he plans to message Holland after watching the film, along with The Odyssey, another Holland release he has not managed to see. Garfield was speaking to Variety at the Los Angeles premiere of The Uprising on Wednesday.

Andrew Garfield has not seen Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Garfield said he is excited to see Holland’s latest Spider-Man film, but has not congratulated his fellow Peter Parker yet. “A movie making money and people going to see it is an incredible thing,” he told Variety. “But I will reach out to him once I’ve seen [Spider-Man], which I’m very excited to see.”

Variety reported that Spider-Man: Brand New Day had reached $891 million at the domestic box office and was predicted to become the first film to make $1 billion in North America alone. Garfield said he was not surprised by the response, arguing that audiences see something of themselves in Spider-Man.

The comments follow Garfield’s return as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home, where his version of the character appeared alongside Holland and Tobey Maguire. His earlier comments about only returning for an unconventional Spider-Man film, potentially a road movie, are covered in our previous report on Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man return.

What Garfield said about Avengers: Doomsday

Garfield also denied that he appears in Avengers: Doomsday, although his wording left the usual amount of room for internet theories. He said the audience will have to find out “one way or the other”.

For now, Garfield’s position is straightforward: he has not watched Spider-Man: Brand New Day, so he has not sent Holland a message about its success. The film’s wider box-office run is covered in tbreak’s report on Spider-Man: Brand New Day crossing $2 billion.
