AirPods 5 vs AirPods Pro 3 in the UAE: which pair should you buy?

AED 400 apart, and one of them takes your pulse

Apple’s audio line-up in the UAE now runs from AED 549 to AED 2,099. Most people are choosing between the AirPods 5 at AED 549 and the AirPods Pro 3 at AED 949.

One of them is new, and one is not: AirPods 5 go on sale on 18 September, while AirPods Pro 3 have been on sale since September last year and were not updated at this event. Both run the H2 chip and offer Active Noise Cancellation, which is why the choice is less obvious than it used to be.

Note the middle column, because Apple’s naming makes it easy to miss. AED 80 more gets you the Wireless Charging Case, and that is not only about charging: it adds an extra hour of listening with ANC, the volume swipe gesture on the stem, and a speaker in the case so Find My can make it chirp. If you are buying AirPods 5, that is the version to buy.

One of these is new; the other is a year old

Worth being clear about, because Apple’s September pages blur it: AirPods Pro 3 were announced in September 2025 and got no hardware update this year — Apple’s UAE store lists them with a plain Buy button and no availability date, while AirPods 5 carry a New badge and an 18 September date.

Everything the Pro 3 does, it has been doing for a year. That is not an argument against buying them; the heart rate sensor and the hearing health suite are still unmatched in the range. It does mean you are buying a mid-cycle product, and if having the newest hardware in the line-up matters to you, AirPods 5 are the only new earbuds Apple launched this month.

The open-ear versus in-ear question decides most of this

AirPods 5 sit in your ear without sealing it. AirPods Pro 3 use silicone tips that seal—five sizes, including an XXS —with a layer of foam-infused microspheres in the tip to cancel more noise passively before the electronics do anything.

That single difference drives everything else. Apple describes the AirPods 5’s cancellation as the best in an open-ear design, which is a real qualifier rather than marketing hedging: an unsealed earbud can only do so much against a Metro carriage or a plane cabin. Apple rates the Pro 3 at up to three times the cancellation of AirPods 5, and it is the only one of the two worth considering for a long-haul flight out of DXB.

It cuts the other way too. If sealed tips make your ears ache after an hour, or you want to hear traffic while running along the Marina, the open fit is the point, not a compromise.

What only the Pro 3 does

Heart rate sensing. A sensor pulses invisible light through the ear to track heart rate and calories during workouts, feeding your Move ring. If you train without a watch, this is the headline feature and nothing else in the range has it.

The hearing health suite. A scientifically validated Hearing Test that works across a broad range of background conditions, a Hearing Aid feature for mild to moderate hearing loss, and active Hearing Protection that uses the H2 chip to cut loud environmental noise. Taken together, these are the most genuinely useful features Apple has put in earbuds, and they are entirely absent from AirPods 5.

Battery that lasts a working day. Eight hours with ANC on, against four or five.

What both of them do

Both get Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Personalised Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, Live Translation and Siri AI. Both are IP57 rated for dust, sweat and water — a first for the standard AirPods this year, and the difference between a pair that survives a Dubai summer and a pair that does not. Both charge over USB-C.

The usual regional caveat applies to the smart features: Live Translation is limited to selected languages and regions, and Apple Intelligence still does not support Arabic. Buy either pair for the audio, not for the AI.

What about the rest of the range?

Two other options are worth knowing about before you commit. AirPods Max 2 sit at the top at AED 2,099 — over-ear, and a different proposition entirely, aimed at people who want headphones rather than earbuds for listening at a desk or on long flights.

At the other end, Apple has discontinued AirPods 4 in the UAE. If you spot a pair still on shelves at a discount, the calculation is straightforward: they lack the IP57 rating, the newer acoustics and this generation’s feature set. A clearance price has to be steep to be worth it over AirPods 5.

AirPods Pro 2 also still turn up discounted at UAE retailers, and the Pro 3 replaced them a year ago. It keeps the Hearing Test and Hearing Aid features. They lose the heart rate sensor, the improved cancellation, the five-size tips and the extra Transparency battery life. If you find them meaningfully below AED 949, they remain a sensible buy.

Which should you buy?

Buy AirPods 5 with the Wireless Charging Case at AED 629 if you want AirPods for calls, podcasts, commuting by car, and general use; if sealed tips don’t agree with you; or if you want situational awareness while running or cycling outdoors. Skip the AED 549 version — the extra hour and the volume swipe are worth it.

Buy AirPods Pro 3 at AED 949 if you fly often, work in an open-plan office, want serious noise cancellation, train without an Apple Watch, or are interested in the hearing health features. The AED 320 difference over the better AirPods 5 buys twice the battery and a category of features the cheaper pair simply lacks.

Buy neither if you already have AirPods Pro 2 and are happy. The step up to the Pro 3 is real but incremental, and the Pro 3 is a year-old product now rather than something you need to rush at.
