Sicario 3 is moving ahead with Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin attached to return, with Padraic McKinley set to direct and Steven Knight writing the screenplay, according to Deadline’s report.
The three actors agreed to return after reading Knight’s latest draft, Deadline reports. The Hollywood Reporter separately confirmed the cast and the new writer-director pairing. Neither outlet has disclosed plot details.

Sicario 3 cast and creative team
Blunt returns as FBI agent Kate Macer, who was absent from 2018’s Sicario: Day of the Soldado. Del Toro and Brolin reprise Alejandro Gillick and Matt Graver, respectively, reuniting the central trio from Denis Villeneuve’s 2015 original. The August Sicario 3 update covered Brolin’s earlier confirmation that the film was happening; at the time, no other cast member or director had been confirmed.
McKinley, whose recent film is The Weight, will direct from Knight’s script. Knight created Peaky Blinders and wrote the screenplay for the upcoming James Bond film, according to IGN’s report. The reports identify Knight as the screenwriter; neither confirms whether Sheridan will be involved in another capacity.
Sicario 3 filming and release plans
Deadline reports that the producers plan to shoot at the start of next year, while McKinley and Knight continue working on the script with input from the returning cast. That is a reported target, not a confirmed start date.
Lionsgate released the first two films, but the new project is being taken to market, with several studios reportedly interested. No distributor, release date or plot has been announced, so there is no confirmed date for Sicario 3 to reach cinemas.
Does Sicario 3 continue directly from the first film?
Emily Blunt is attached to return as Kate Macer, but the plot has not been disclosed. The reports do not say how the third film connects her story to the 2015 original.
Is Sicario 3 expected to end the series?
The Hollywood Reporter has described the film as an expected trilogy capper, citing producer Molly Smith’s 2023 comments that Taylor Sheridan had envisioned the story as a trilogy. The latest report does not confirm that the third film will be the franchise’s last.
