Sicario 3 is happening, Josh Brolin says — with production expected to begin “soon”.
The actor, who has played CIA officer Matt Graver in both films to date, made the comment while promoting The Dog Stars, the Ridley Scott film he headlines. He told ScreenRant that the threequel is on, but offered no director, writer, cast or release date.
Sicario 3 has spent years in development limbo. The 2015 original, directed by Denis Villeneuve, is one of the defining drug-war films of its decade. The sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018), directed by Stefano Sollima, carried on without Emily Blunt’s Kate Macer. The two films have passed US$160 million globally.
Taylor Sheridan wrote both films but has since filled his calendar with the Yellowstone universe and its spin-offs, including Lioness, now in its third season. Christopher McQuarrie has been described as a “partner” on the project at various points, though in what capacity was never specified. The 2023 writers’ strike paused development for a time, with the script said to be nearly complete.
What we still don’t know about Sicario 3
The open questions are the obvious ones. Denis Villeneuve is finishing Dune: Part Three, due in UAE cinemas in December, and is then expected to move on to the next James Bond film — which, per IGN, likely rules him out of a return to the director’s chair. Whether Benicio del Toro’s Alejandro returns, or Emily Blunt is brought back, has not been confirmed. Brolin is the only attachment so far.
