OpenAI has launched GPT-6 Sol and Luna, extending its latest model family beyond GPT-6 Astra with cheaper options for coding, document work and high-volume API tasks. OpenAI says the new models are available in its API as gpt-6-sol and gpt-6-luna, with rollout also reaching ChatGPT Work, Codex and selected consumer tiers.
GPT-6 Sol and Luna cut API prices
The biggest change is cost. OpenAI says GPT-6 Sol and Luna are 50% cheaper than the promotional pricing for their GPT-5.6 predecessors, helped by improvements to caching and inference. The company lists the following prices per one million tokens:

Sol is aimed at complex work such as coding, while Luna is positioned for high-volume jobs with a clear goal, including summarising documents, extracting information and answering short questions. OpenAI says GPT-6 Astra remains its top model for the most demanding tasks.
The launch follows OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra release, which introduced the family’s flagship model. OpenAI says Sol makes about half as many factual mistakes as GPT-5.6 Sol in its internal evaluation, while both new models improve coding and computer-use performance at lower cost. Those results come from OpenAI’s own tests, rather than an independent benchmark.
Where GPT-6 Sol and Luna are available
TechCrunch reports that the models are available in the ChatGPT API, ChatGPT Work and Codex for most paid accounts. OpenAI’s announcement says Sol and Luna are available in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users, while Luna is also available to Free and Go users in the desktop app. ChatGPT’s wider rollout is gradual.
For developers, the lower token prices are the immediate change. The models can be called using the new API IDs, while OpenAI’s Codex developer tools remain the practical route for teams testing coding workflows. OpenAI has not announced UAE-specific API pricing or a separate local rollout; UAE developers will need to check their account and billing region.
The release arrives shortly after Anthropic launched Opus 5.5, adding another cheaper model tier to an already crowded AI market. The choice now depends less on which lab has the largest flagship and more on how much routine work can be moved to a smaller model without the bill becoming the most intelligent part of the system.
