Omarchy: the Linux distro built for the agentic AI age

NetworkChuck’s 33-minute argument for Linux has done what most Linux videos don’t: it made the case that a distro can be the operating system of the agentic AI age, and the comments agreed loudly enough to matter. The video, posted on 21 August, sits at more than 430,000 views, and the comment section is full of people deciding which machine to wipe. The distro at the centre is Omarchy, the Arch-based system from DHH that ships with an AI agent built in. It is the anchor of this roundup, but it is not alone. Ubuntu is calling its next release the OS for the agentic era, Fedora is wiring AI into GNOME, and CachyOS is tuning Arch for speed. Here is the field, and what actually works.

What Omarchy actually is

Omarchy is Arch Linux with the Hyprland tiling window manager and a desktop shell called Quickshell on top, preconfigured until it looks like something from a film. NetworkChuck’s install of the current release, Quattro, took one minute and 47 seconds on his dual-4090 desktop and about three minutes on an older gaming PC — a long way from the evening of pacman commands that a manual Arch install usually demands. DHH’s own daily drivers are a Dell XPS 16 and a Framework 13, the laptop tbreak sees as the “MacBook Pro for Linux users”.

The “from scratch” distinction matters here. Arch is one of a handful of independent distributions, alongside Slackware, Gentoo and Red Hat/Fedora, and it has a culture built around configuring everything yourself. Omarchy does the configuring for you. That is the “opinionated” in DHH’s description, and it is also the thing that annoys a specific stripe of Arch user, who will tell you at length that you have not earned the right to say “I use Arch, by the way” if you did not spend the weeks setting it up. NetworkChuck’s answer to that crowd is blunt: the whole point is that you no longer have to.

The AI agent that lives in the OS

The built-in agent is the part the video keeps coming back to, and it is the part that separates Omarchy from a themed Arch install. Every major coding-agent CLI — Claude, Codex, ChatGPT, Gemini — is pre-wired as a launcher, so you pick a default and it becomes the system’s AI. Nothing is downloaded until you first run one.

What the agent can do is unusually deep for something that ships with an OS. When a process crashes, a notification offers to diagnose it with AI: the system walks the agent through the core dump and decides whether to report it.

The desktop can be re-themed on request — NetworkChuck asked for a Cyberpunk neon theme and a Windows XP one, both built and applied while he watched. There is a skills system that lets the agent adjust the Hyprland config, tweak the top bar, or write a new theme from scratch, and a subscription tracker that shows your token usage and weekly limits across every AI service you have connected.

It also runs local models. The install menu offers LM Studio and Ollama, so you can hook a local LLM up instead of paying for an API — a question that shows up in the video’s comments as often as anything else.

The $8 million vote of confidence

Two days after NetworkChuck’s video went up, DHH announced the Omacom Foundation: a nonprofit holding Omarchy’s trademarks and funding its infrastructure, seeded with $8 million from eight patrons. The list reads like a who’s who of the tech industry — Shopify’s Tobi Lütke, Stripe’s Patrick Collison, Dell’s Michael Dell, Block’s Jack Dorsey, Cloudflare’s Matthew Prince, Oculus cofounder Brendan Iribe and 37signals’ Jason Fried, plus DHH himself, a million each.

The money is the point. A distro that lives or dies on one developer’s taste is a hobby; one backed by eight million dollars and a foundation that holds the trademarks is a project with a runway. It also explains why Omarchy’s GitHub repository has 28,100 stars and more than 6,100 commits, with Claude, Codex and Copilot listed among the contributors — the repository itself is built, in part, by agents.

Omarchy is the loudest, but every major distribution is positioning for the same moment. Here is how they compare.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS

Canonical’s pitch has shifted from “the distro that just works” to “the OS for the AI agentic era,” in Mark Shuttleworth’s phrase. The delivery mechanism is the inference snap: snap install nemotron-3-nano gets you an optimised local model with the same confinement rules as any other snap. Ubuntu’s project lead frames the approach as implicit AI first — better speech-to-text, better accessibility — with agentic workflows to follow.

Fedora

Red Hat has been the most deliberate about putting AI inside the OS rather than on top of it. Fedora’s GNOME-based desktop is getting AI integration as a first-class feature, and the community has proposed a “Fedora AI OS” — a federation of agents governed by SELinux and Podman that can control the desktop natively. It is the most cautious of the five, and the most interesting.

CachyOS

CachyOS is the Arch-based distro that keeps coming up in the comments as the rival. It compiles packages with x86-64-v3/v4 and Zen4 instructions plus LTO and PGO, on a custom kernel with the EEVDF scheduler, and Arch comes out measurably faster for it. The same optimisations help local AI workloads. If Omarchy is Arch for aesthetics and agents, CachyOS is Arch for speed.

Pop!_OS / COSMIC

System76’s desktop, written from scratch in Rust, has been in development for years and finally shipped in a form worth daily-driving. COSMIC’s appeal for the agentic age is architectural: it is privacy-first, works with local AI, and has the best out-of-the-box NVIDIA story in Linux. It is the pick for people who want modern design without a tiling window manager’s learning curve.

The smaller players

The hobbyist scene has noticed the category too. AgenticArch is a community project billing itself as an “agentic Arch” distribution, built for people who want the agent harness without Omarchy’s opinions. Vanilla OS takes Ubuntu and makes it immutable and atomic, aimed at developers who want a system that cannot break itself. And because the Steam Deck runs Arch, Omarchy can be installed there — the tiling desktop on a handheld is an acquired taste, but the option exists.

Will it run on your hardware?

The comment section is full of people asking exactly this, and the answers are mostly encouraging. Omarchy’s manual lists guides for Apple M1 and M2 machines via Asahi Linux, though that route takes effort. NVIDIA cards work, with the usual caveats that come with NVIDIA on Linux. Older machines are fine — one commenter runs it on a 2013 MacBook Pro, another on a nine-year-old Dell with 8GB of RAM.

Gaming is where Linux stopped being a compromise. Steam’s Proton compatibility layer now handles most Windows titles, and the platform’s share of Steam’s own user base hit 5.3% earlier this year, with Windows below 93% for the first time. Nvidia’s Jensen Huang has been making the same bet from the other end, arguing that your next computer won’t run apps so much as run agents. The AI crash diagnosis in Omarchy means the one scary part — an unreadable error — now has a translator built in.

How to try it without committing

Omarchy’s Quattro release added a proper dual-boot installer alongside Windows, and there are community guides for running it in a virtual machine, so you can test it on the machine you already own. The sensible route is a VM first, a USB stick second, and a full wipe when you are sure. It costs nothing, which is the other thing the field has in common: every distro in this roundup is free, and every one of them will run on hardware you already own.

The region is part of the same wave. HUMAIN’s agentic AI laptop is heading to LEAP 2026, and the local agency scene has been building its own agent platforms rather than licensing Western ones. Linux is the substrate under most of that work — the free, open layer that the agentic era is being built on, whether the machine in front of you runs Omarchy, Ubuntu or something else entirely.

Is Omarchy really Arch Linux?

Yes, with a safety layer. Omarchy is Arch with Hyprland and Quickshell preconfigured, but it runs its own repository about a month behind Arch’s bleeding edge, with stable, RC, edge and dev channels, so updates are less likely to break your system.

Can I use a local LLM instead of a paid AI subscription?

Yes. Omarchy’s install menu offers LM Studio (which includes a GUI) and Ollama (command line), so you can run models on your own hardware. The built-in agent also connects to Claude, Codex, ChatGPT and Gemini, and tracks your usage across them.

Who is DHH?
