Google has expanded Gmail AI Overviews to users worldwide, letting people ask natural-language questions in Gmail search and receive summaries drawn from their email. The feature is rolling out globally, but personal accounts still need an eligible paid Google AI plan and Gmail set to English.
Google announced the wider rollout in a Workspace update on September 15. Android Authority reports that the feature had previously been limited to users in the US with English-language Gmail.
What Gmail AI Overviews can do
Gmail AI Overviews can answer questions about messages, summarise information spread across multiple conversations and pull out details such as travel information, appointment times, invoices, tickets and delivery tracking. Google says Gmail first finds relevant emails, then generates the answer from that material rather than searching the open web.
The feature works with natural-language questions and key phrases. Google gives examples including “When is my next appointment?” and “Summarise my upcoming trip.” Search operators such as is:unread and from: prevent an AI Overview from appearing, according to Google’s Gmail Help page.
Gmail AI Overviews: what UAE users need
Google’s listed regional exclusions for personal accounts are the European Economic Area, the UK, Switzerland and Japan. The UAE is not named among those exclusions, but that does not guarantee immediate access: the rollout is gradual and the feature may not be available on every account yet.
Personal users need Google AI Plus, Pro or Ultra, while work and school users need an eligible Google Workspace plan. Smart features in Gmail, Chat and Meet and Google Workspace smart features must also be enabled.
Rapid Release Workspace domains began receiving the feature gradually on September 3, with visibility taking up to 15 days. Scheduled Release domains are due to begin a one-to-three-day rollout on September 21, while consumer accounts are also in a gradual rollout.
Are Gmail AI Overviews available in the UAE?
The UAE is not listed among Google’s excluded regions for personal accounts, but access is gradual and depends on your plan, settings and account rollout.
