Sony wanted a crossover but left Spider-Man on his MCU path
Tom Holland says Sony wanted to merge his Spider-Man with its villain-focused universe, but the crossover never found the right time to happen. Speaking to Josh Horowitz, as reported by our sister site IGN Middle East, Holland attributed the idea to Sony’s Tom Rothman.
According to Holland, Sony was building its separate universe with the expectation that the two sides might eventually connect. Confidence in the Spider-Man films directed by Jon Watts, and in Holland’s continuing place within the MCU, instead led Sony to let that series remain on its existing path.
Holland also rejected the idea that he had fought against appearing in one of Sony’s spin-offs. He said there were no battles over forcing Spider-Man into a particular film; the proposed merger simply never came to fruition.
Holland’s recollection is the basis of the report, and the supplied material contains no separate Sony or Marvel confirmation that the crossover reached a formal production schedule. The plan is best understood as an internal ambition that remained in development rather than a cancelled, officially announced film.
Madame Web and Morbius showed traces of the abandoned connection
Development art and a Morbius post-credits scene show that Sony explored links to Holland’s corner of the MCU. Concept art released after Madame Web showed Holland’s Spider-Man fighting Ezekiel Sims in the sky, although nothing resembling that sequence appeared in the finished film.
Morbius made a more visible attempt when Michael Keaton’s Vulture appeared after being transported between universes. It created an on-screen connection to an MCU-era character, but it never developed into an appearance by Holland’s Spider-Man.
Together, those examples support the idea that Sony considered ways to connect the films. Neither amounted to a completed Spider-Man crossover or a publicly announced timetable, leaving audiences with concept art, one continuity-bending cameo, and a remarkable amount of multiverse paperwork.
Venom remains possible, but no crossover has been announced
A future meeting between Holland’s Spider-Man and Venom remains an idea rather than a confirmed project. Holland said anything could happen, while Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal have previously left open the possibility of the characters meeting.
Holland has also hinted that a Venom symbiote story could still lie ahead, and Feige has kept the crossover prospect alive. None of those comments provides a title, date, or concrete plan, so the sensible level of excitement remains cautiously web-sized.
