The Odyssey crosses $1 billion — and Nolan’s highest-grossing film ever is days away

The Odyssey has crossed $1 billion after three weeks — Nolan's first since The Dark Knight Rises, and his all-time record is now in reach.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has crossed $1 billion at the global box office after three weeks of release — the director’s first film to reach the milestone since The Dark Knight Rises in 2012.

Variety puts the total at $1.008 billion: $429.65 million domestically and $578.8 million internationally. That makes it the 65th film ever to clear the mark, and the fifth of 2026, after Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Toy Story 5, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Michael.

The record that falls next

The Dark Knight Rises ($1.08 billion) and The Dark Knight ($1.008 billion) have sat unchallenged at the top of Nolan’s box office chart for 14 years. Both are about to be demoted: Variety reports The Odyssey will pass them in a matter of days to become the director’s highest-grossing film ever.

IMAX has contributed $257 million of the total — enough to make The Odyssey the company’s highest-grossing release of all time by the end of the weekend. The film has yet to open in China (14 August, on nearly 800 IMAX screens) or Japan (11 September). Korea joined the run on Wednesday.

Not bad for a three-hour, adult-skewing drama adapted from a 3,000-year-old poem.

A year that keeps making history

2026 has now produced five billion-dollar films — the most since 2019’s record nine, and more than any single year since. Hollywood is banking on The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day to push domestic ticket sales past $4 billion for only the second time since COVID, per Variety.

What it means if you’re watching in the UAE

The Odyssey is still in UAE cinemas, and Saudi Arabia is already a top-10 market for the film, at $13.1 million, per Deadline.

tbreak has followed the run from the record $264.1 million opening through the week-two hold and the $1 billion run-up. The milestone is now official.
