Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is at $911 million worldwide after three weekends, and Universal has become the first studio past $4 billion at the global box office in 2026.
Deadline puts the film’s third global weekend at $136.2 million, with $68 million of it from IMAX screens — the large-format exhibitor’s second-highest-grossing weekend ever. Universal’s year-to-date total splits into $1.53 billion domestically and $2.48 billion internationally. It is the studio’s first $4 billion year since 2023 and the fifth in its history. Only three films have crossed $1 billion worldwide in 2026, and two of them are Universal’s: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Michael.
The $1 billion question
The Odyssey needs about $90 million more to join them, and the pace suggests it will not take long. It should also soon pass The Dark Knight Rises ($1.08 billion) and The Dark Knight ($1.008 billion) to become Nolan’s highest-grossing film ever — and it has yet to open in China, Japan or Korea. The run has been part of a record-breaking summer at large: the collective weekend marketplace hit $430 million, the biggest in box office history. “The combination of ‘Spider-Man’ and ‘The Odyssey’ — a legacy superhero sequel and a big original production — is taking the box office to new highs by a comfortable margin,” FranchiseRe’s David A. Gross told Variety, calling the numbers “stunning”. In other words, the record weekend was a two-film job.
