Synology has launched ActiveProtect Manager 2.0, a free update for its DP-Series data protection appliances that adds wider platform support, cross-platform recovery and volume-level encryption. The release covers hybrid infrastructure spanning cloud, virtualisation and productivity services.
ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 expands backup support
The update adds protection for Amazon EC2, Azure VM, Proxmox VE, Nutanix AHV and Google Workspace. Workloads can be backed up and restored across different environments, which also gives organisations another route for disaster recovery and workload migration.
ActiveProtect Vault now supports more Synology NAS models, while Azure Blob Storage joins Amazon S3 as a copy and tiering destination. Backups held in either cloud can be restored directly to Amazon EC2 or Azure VM without passing through on-premises hardware, according to Synology’s announcement.
The update also adds software-based encryption at the volume level. Synology says backup data and system configurations remain inaccessible if drives are stolen or hardware is lost.

Synology is keeping the more ambitious security work for APM 2.1
The company says the upcoming APM 2.1 update will track changes in backup versions, including mass deletions, file modifications and entropy, to identify possible anomalies. Suspicious copies will be quarantined for administrator review, with the model using those outcomes to reduce false positives.
APM 2.1 is also planned to scan backups for malware before restoration through integrations with Microsoft Defender, Bitdefender and ESET. If the newest backup is infected, Auto Fallback will restore the latest clean version instead.
ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 is available now at no extra cost for all DP-Series appliances. Synology’s product page lists the supported appliance range. The update follows Synology’s recent NAS hardware launch and new high-capacity storage releases as businesses continue adding cloud storage to on-premises backup systems.
