Synology has launched the neo+ series of DiskStation NAS boxes — four models that ship with 4GB of non-ECC RAM as standard, trading a smaller memory configuration for a smaller price tag. The lineup is a direct response to the DRAM shortage that has pushed memory prices up by as much as 89% in a single quarter.
The neo+ series comprises the 2-bay DS725neo+, 4-bay DS925neo+, 5-bay DS1525neo+ and 8-bay DS1825neo+. They are built on the same platform as the DS Plus series and will sit alongside it, giving Synology a cheaper entry point for buyers who would rather upgrade memory later.
Why less RAM is the point
The default configuration is 4GB of non-ECC DDR4 SODIMM, down from the 8GB ECC the Plus models typically carry. The trade is deliberate. “As memory market dynamics shift, the neo+ Series reinforces our commitment to accessibility,” said Bie-I Chu, Executive Vice President of the Synology NAS Group, “giving customers the freedom to scale hardware according to their immediate budget and future growth.”
“Memory market dynamics” is doing some work there. Consumer DRAM contract prices rose 89% in a single 2026 quarter, per TrendForce data cited by Wccftech, and Gartner has forecast a surge on the order of 130% as AI data centres soak up HBM supply. Team Group’s general manager told Tom’s Hardware the crisis “has only just started”. A NAS that ships with less RAM is one way to keep the sticker price from doing the same.
The upgrade path stays open: the neo+ models support the same ECC memory modules as their Plus siblings, up to 32GB. Mixing non-ECC and ECC modules is not supported — swap, don’t blend.
What you still get
The neo+ models keep the hardware a NAS buyer actually uses: M.2 slots for SSD caching, 2.5GbE networking, and the DX525 expansion unit for extra bays. The DS1825neo+ and DS1525neo+ add a PCIe 3.0 slot for optional 10GbE or 25GbE network cards. Software is the full DSM package — Synology Drive for private cloud sync, Active Backup Suite for endpoint and VM backups, Surveillance Station for multi-site camera recording. Seagate’s 32TB drives and its UAE storage line-up are the sort of drives these boxes will be filled with.
What the neo+ series costs in the UAE
UAE listings for the neo+ models were not live on launch day, but the Plus equivalents set the ceiling. On Amazon.ae, the 2-bay DS725+ is AED 2,190, the 4-bay DS925+ is AED 2,699, the 5-bay DS1525+ is AED 3,999 and the 8-bay DS1825+ is AED 4,874. The neo+ versions are meant to undercut those prices — by how much will be clear once retailers list them in the coming days.
