Why does Morgoth’s Iron Crown change Tolkien’s lore?
Sauron wielding Morgoth’s Iron Crown is a major departure from Tolkien’s account of the artefact. The Crown belongs to the First Age, when Morgoth forged it in Angband to hold the Silmarils and underline his status as Middle-earth’s original Dark Lord.
Sauron served Morgoth before becoming the principal evil of the Second Age, but Tolkien never depicts him possessing or using his former master’s Crown. Following Morgoth’s final defeat, the Valar beat the Iron Crown into a collar used to bind him.
The series therefore takes a famous object with an established fate and turns it into Sauron’s very effective shield. It makes for an imposing image, but the lore has been moved around considerably to get there. Spectacle wins this round, and the canon is apparently expected to walk it off.
What does the Sauron and Balrog footage reveal?
The footage reveals Sauron confronting a Balrog and blocking its flaming sword with the Iron Crown, but it leaves the setting and the creature’s identity unanswered. As our sister site IGN Middle East reported from Comic-Con, Amazon has also confirmed that Simon Pegg voices the Balrog.
The video does not let viewers hear the creature speak. A prompter used during Pegg’s voice-over session displays one of its lines, confirming that this version can hold a conversation as well as ruin everyone’s afternoon with a sword made of fire.
That is another significant change from the source material. Balrogs never speak on-page in Tolkien’s texts, and there is no canonical scene in which one converses with Sauron.
The show has not confirmed whether this is the Balrog awakened beneath the Misty Mountains in Season 2. That creature emerged after Dwarven mithril mining, leading King Durin III to sacrifice himself in Khazad-dûm. Season 3 must explain whether Sauron is visiting that Balrog or encountering another of Morgoth’s former servants.
The confrontation fits the wider Season 3 footage of Middle-earth at war. Amazon’s synopsis says five years have passed since Eregion fell, while Sauron is pursuing the power needed to create the One Ring.
When is The Rings of Power Season 3 streaming in the UAE?
The Rings of Power Season 3 starts on Prime Video in the UAE on 11 November 2026, the same day as its global release. The first four episodes arrive together, so the new season begins with a sizeable return to Middle-earth — no VPN acrobatics required.
Episodes five and six follow on 18 November, while episodes seven and eight conclude the season on 25 November. The full Season 3 UAE release schedule spans three weekly drops rather than releasing all eight episodes at once.
The Iron Crown scene suggests the series remains willing to make bold inventions around Tolkien’s history. Whether that produces a stronger season depends on how convincingly the show connects its giant confrontations to the characters beneath all that fire, shadow, and extremely consequential headwear.
