The Oswald Disney+ miniseries has a date: February 2027. Jon Favreau announced the three-part show — a hybrid of live action and hand-drawn 2D animation that he wrote and directs — at the D23 Entertainment Showcase in Anaheim on Friday night.
The cast includes Amy Sedaris, Kathryn Hahn, Steve Martin, Al Madrigal, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Mykal-Michelle Harris and Ryder Allen, per Variety. Favreau said veteran 2D animators were recruited for the series, and John Debney — of Hocus Pocus and The Jungle Book — is composing the score, according to WDW News Today.
Why Oswald matters
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks’s creation in 1927, the studio’s first cartoon star and a year older than Mickey Mouse. Disney lost the character to Universal in 1928 when distributor Charles Mintz took the contract and most of the animation staff with it — the setback that produced Mickey. Oswald returned to Disney in 2006 in a trade with Universal, and has since resurfaced in the Epic Mickey games and the 2013 short Get a Horse!.
When does the Oswald Disney+ series arrive?
