The film has taken more than US$473 million worldwide on a reported US$85 million budget, per The Numbers — narrowly inside the year’s top 10. It is also among the best-reviewed films Illumination has made; IGN gave it 8/10, and its reviewer, Eric Goldman, was characteristically precise about what it is:

“Minions & Monsters uses those little banana-loving dudes to make an ode to early Hollywood and to the power of cinema and storytelling.”

Eric Goldman, IGN

The prequel is set in the early 20th century: a tribe of Minions, in pursuit of a new ‘Big Boss’, mistakes an actor for a prolific villain and stumbles into Hollywood. Pierre Coffin returns as the Minions, with Trey Parker, Allison Janney, Christoph Waltz and Jeff Bridges in the human cast and a George Lucas cameo in the credits.

What it means if you’re watching in the UAE

For now, the cinema is still the reliable option. Minions & Monsters is in its eighth week in UAE cinemas, taking AED 303,183 on the 7–9 August weekend per our box office report. UAE digital storefronts had not listed the film at the time of writing — Apple’s UAE store and JustWatch UAE both showed no digital offer — so keep an eye on Prime Video UAE and Apple TV UAE if you’d rather not leave the house. The 4K disc follows on 8 September for the patient.
